The inaugural Artcurial Motorcars auction will be held during the Le Mans Classic, on Friday 9 July, just ahead of the race itself (scheduled for Saturday/Sunday July 10/11).

The new team at the Artcurial Motorcars department is offering 60 cars, all from private collectors, estimated at about 9 million euros in total -- a sort of trial lap before the challenge of Retromobile in 2011.

"We'll have a good, clean sale, with "fresh" cars that haven't been through the market before, offered at attractive prices in a very dynamic market ," said Matthieu Lamoure, director of the new department, leafing through the 250-page bilingual catalogue.

Hervé Poulain will conduct the sale, and one highlight is sure to be one of the celebrated Art Cars he pioneered: the McLaren F1 GTR with BMW engine, painted by César, piloted by Hervé himself in 1995.

In 1995, 35 years after his first landmark compression, César concluded his foray into the automobile word by painting the MacLaren F1 dream machine to be offered on July 9, admitting it was ‘the first time I have used a car without removing its original function - it continues to work, and boy it can go fast!’ César was accorded total creative liberty; the MacLaren finished 13th.

The older CD Panhard, also being offered for auction, is an emblematic model from the CD adventure at Le Mans. Piloted in 1962 by Alain Bertaut & André Guihaudin as n°55, the car is presented in its 1962 factory configuration, with its 848cc engine with two inverted doublebarrel carburattors. The car is french blue with a spartan black interior and its original black vinyl seats. This is a magnificent opportunity to acquire “in its original condition”, one of the amazingly fast Panhard which , during a difficult period for french motor sport, ensured the Marseillaise resounded after top international events. This car makes an ideal sesame to future participation in the Le Mans Classic.

Various collections feature among the sale’s 60 cars. An ensemble of nine cars from Normandy includes a Delahaye 135 M Cabriolet by Chapron; an Aston Martin DBS Vantage, with rare left-hand drive; a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 once owned by Baron Empain; a Peugeot 205 Turbo 16…

Another exceptional collection is that of a Paris businessman with a passion for race-cars from the 1960s: a Lamborghini Miura SV, with just 5000km on the clock; a mythical, fully restored Ferrari 275 GTB4; an AC Cobra 289, in high demand among collectors; and a Porsche 959 once owned by Bernard Tapie…

Another collection, of three cars, features a superb Alpine A110 Group IV that won the 1971 Coupe des Alpes; a 2.7-litre ‘matching numbers’ Porsche 911 RS Carrera, from 1973; and a high-performance, 6.3-litre Mercedes 300SEL - a car beloved of pilots in the 1970s.

Artcurial’s spectacular sale signifies a return to tradition. It’s the first time the Le Mans Classic has hosted an auction for many years.

Artcurial’s Hervé Poulain, a man renowned for his exploits both on and off the track, was the first French auctioneer to hold automobile sales back in the 1970s. Now Artcurial - who long boasted the world record price in the field – are writing a new chapter in the department’s history by launching the exclusively styled Artcurial Motorcars.

Directed by Matthieu Lamoure, alongside specialist Pierre Novikoff and trilingual administrator Iris Hummel, Artcurial Motorcars is aiming to consolidate its international presence by selecting ‘fresh’ and ‘interesting’ automobiles for auction, providing the best expertise on the market, and offering clients new, efficient, high-quality service. And starting with this upcoming July sale, Artcurial Motorcars is publishing a dynamic catalogue accompanied by videos showing the vehicles in action.
