In 1969, the Sunoco-sponsored Roger Penske Camaro with the legendary Mark Donohue as the top driver repeated their previous domination of Trans Am racing by winning another eighteen out of twenty-five races. The Sunoco Penske number nine blue Camaro not only won races, but also won the hearts of Chevy enthusiasts and racing fans across the continent.

Nearly forty years later, that racing Camaro is still fondly recalled and, while there have been some “ tribute ” cars built, none as special as this one. To build this as a truly authentic tribute the Sunoco/Penske Camaro, body panels were formed on an English wheel to duplicate the exact configurations of the real car.

Painted in the authentic Sunoco/Penske racing blue with a black vinyl top and bright yellow racing wheels, this Camaro is a 1969 time warp. Of course, there are all the usual Sunoco/Penske markings, decals and sponsors displayed along the flanks of this retro racer. All the chrome has been replaced or re-plated, not only to give this Camaro added sparkle, but also to give it a street legal look.

Power is sourced from a 700bhp, 500M Donovan aluminum V8 block featuring a Callies crankshaft, Oliver rods, J.E. domed pistons, a competition roller camshaft, GM aluminum cylinder heads, Dart intake and an 850 Holley carburetor. There is a roller valvetrain, a Jones Drive System waterpump, power steering and alternator, a custom dry sump pump by C-line, and a dual MSD ignition system.

A four-speed Jerico transmission handles the shifts along with a Quartermaster 7-1/4" clutch. A Griffin 27" aluminum radiator with oil cooler keeps everything at the right temperature. Jet-coated headers and exhaust system provide necessary back pressure and unrestricted flow, while six-piston front and four-piston rear Wilwood brakes control stopping.

In fact, the chassis alone is a veritable rolling catalog of high performance and racing parts with Blistein racing shocks, Wilwood hubs, dual master cylinders and brake pedals. Up front goodies include Coleman aluminum spindles and a three-piece swaybar, tubular upper and lower A-arms, a Sweet collapsible steering column and a close-ratio steering box. Out back, you ’ ll note a Watts link, a Winters 9" floater rear end, Mono rear leaf springs with coil covers, and a Quartermaster aluminum driveshaft. For safety, this Trans Am Camaro replica is fitted with 2" x 3" box frame tubing concealed inside the rocker panels with a 1-1/2" rollcage with NASCAR style door bars, an onboard 5lb fire system and a Fuel Safe 22-gallon fuel cell.

Inside for comfort, the driver keeps a cool head thanks to a helmet A/C system, while being kept well informed via full instrumentation courtesy of Quick Car, as well as through all the latest racing equipment and technology. Further tribute to Penske is clearly evident in the build quality and presentation of this Camaro. The owner/driver can take as many trophies standing still as they do on the racetrack because of its concours quality condition. This spectacular number nine Penske “ Tribute ” racing Camaro is ready for you to relive those glory years of Trans Am racing. Just sitting behind the wheel will bring a smile to your face, even before you start to race.
