The most powerful of the 1966 Corvettes were immediately identifiable by the power bulge in the hood. Although rated at the same power output as the 396 cubic inch version, the 427 engine boasted of an extra 50 foot/pounds of torque, which was now an awesome 365 at 3600rpm. The 427 cubic inch Turbo-Jet V8 version could rocket you to 140mph or do the familiar 0-60 mph in around five seconds. Sports Car Graphic managed a 0-100mph time in 11.2 seconds, while Car and Driver magazine did a standing quarter mile in 12.8 seconds at 112mph.

Painted a striking silver, the 1966 Chevrolet Corvette L-72 Coupe pictured here has a matching silver vinyl interior. Spotless inside, the handsome black dash sports the optional tasteful wooden steering wheel. New black carpets add to the bold contrast inside.

Power comes in mass quantity from the thundering L-72 427 cubic inch V8 engine, which is mated to the optional Muncie high performance four-speed manual transmission, and glutinously fed through a four-barrel Holley carburetor. The 425 horsepower and 365 ft/lbs of torque produced by this beast are effectively transmitted to the rear wheels via a Posi-Traction limited-slip differential. In addition to the telltale power bulge on the hood, the side exhaust erases any notion that this Corvette Roadster is just a good-looking ride.

Sought after options present on the Corvette include tinted glass and knock-off style cast aluminum wheels. This beautifully restored 1966 Chevrolet Corvette L-72 Coupe is one of a mere six with its combination of options for that year. Exclusive? Yes, and then there ’ s the fact this Corvette Coupe earned a NCRS Second Flight Award for excellence in restoration. It also comes complete with a dossier documenting the restoration through receipts and photographs, and an impressive collection of manuals and documents, including Judge ’ s score cards from a number of other concours events.

Car and Driver summarized their road test of the 1966 427 Corvette with, “ It ’ s the power more than the engine that overwhelms every other sensation. There ’ s power literally everywhere, great gobs of steam-locomotive, earth-moving torque. ”
