One of the most recognized automotive icons of the 1950s fin era is the 1959 Dodge D500 Custom Royal Lancer. Immediate images of its huge twin tail fins, red rocket-like taillight lenses and dual antennas pointing up toward the sky come to mind.

The year was 1959 and manufacturers were pulling out all the stops with some of the most outlandish designs ever seen. A wealth of glittery embellishments adorned nearly every make and model of American automobile for the 1959 model year. Dodge tastefully applied its “ swept wing styling ” to the D500 and with it created a magnificent automotive design. Adorning the D500 ’ s front were heavy, chrome eyebrow arches across the top of the dual headlamps. These arches then draped down onto each of the front fenders, (filled with flashy, four bladed Lancer spinner style covers) and then swept towards the rear of the car to the rocket booster-shaped rear taillight fins. These fins were described by one automotive editor as “ suggestive ” .

Dodge offered power to match the flamboyant styling of the 1959 models with five available V8 engine options. All this outlandish styling adds up to one flashy fifties ride. The 1959 Dodge D500 Custom Royal Lancer being offered is an excellent example that typifies one of the most iconic years of American automobile styling. The Dodge underwent an extensive restoration in the early part of the 1990s, which returned it to like-factory-new condition. The odometer reads 41,000 miles. The D500 is powered by the powerful 383 cubic inch V8 breathing through a four-barrel carburetor; the entire unit is mated to three-speed torque flight automatic transmission.

The body is finished in metallic Jade Green and white paint, and the interior sports the factory correct matching green vinyl and cloth upholstery. The car ’ s various special order features include power steering, power brakes, rear window defrost, deluxe radio, dual rear speakers, dual rear antennas, and fantastic swivel front seats. This car has numerous First in Class and Best of Show awards to its credit. Undoubtedly, the 1959 Dodge D500 Custom Royal Lancer makes a bold statement and would be a golden ticket for any local cruise.
