When one imagines the California Highway Patrol, images of two police officers patrolling the highways on their motorcycles immediately comes to mind for all non-Californians. Sharing the screen with the motorbikes in the hit 1980s television series C.H.I.P.S, the Dodge Diplomat police cruisers, handled their fair share of lawbreakers.

The genuine CHP Police package Dodge Diplomat being presented here was fully restored by the Orange County Police Academy. The cruiser is fully decaled and finished in the classic black and white paint scheme. The car is powered by a 318 cubic inch V8 power plant breathing through a four-barrel carburetor and mated to a three- speed automatic transmission. It also has the classic black slotted 15x7-inch steel wheels and center caps shod with high-speed-rated radial tires, as well as the requisite front bumper ram bars. No police car would be complete without working sirens and horns, as well as console communication equipment and this one does not disappoint. In fact, it even has a fake shotgun mounted vertically to the dashboard, one more detail that maintains the look and visual impact of a police cruiser from the 1980s.

In a sea of mundane, boredom-inducing commuter cars, police cars are special. Cop cars are built to sustain high speeds, bumper-to-bumper traffic in sweltering heat or subzero temperatures, repeated high-speed cornering and braking, and do it day in and day out.

After completing its restoration, the police car was purchased by a retired CHP officer who lovingly took care of it until its sale to its current owner. Documentation authorizing the sale from the municipal to private sector is included with the police car. Also included are magnetic white signs to cover the police insignia when the police car is driven on the open road, which does somewhat satiate one ĺ s inclination to serve and protect once behind the wheel.
