Ford vice-president of Design, J. Mays, defined design as “ the integration of engineering with styling ” . He identifies this Contour concept as one of the most significant in Ford ’ s recent history. It is a true “ concept ” which owes nothing to any existing – or even contemplated – Ford products. It is an inspiration to both stylists and engineers, embodying multiple unique features that challenge conventional thinking and encourage innovation in components, drivetrain, materials, layout and processes. This Contour starts out with a unique “ T-Drive ” front-wheel drive package invented and patented for Ford by Donald Carriere with a transverse inline eight-cylinder engine. The driveline is taken off the middle of the crankcase to accommodate the engine ’ s length. The body structure is a proposal for a chemically bonded modular aluminum structure invented by Ford and Reynolds Aluminum. Body panels were designed to be formed composite structures incorporating polyurethane and polyurea plastics with metal framing. The front bench seat is an integral part of the body/chassis structure. Fixed in place, the pedal cluster, controls, instrument panel and steering wheel are designed to be power adjustable to adapt to different drivers. Lighting is provided from a single highly efficient Light Engine light source developed by General Electric that provides most of Contour ’ s lighting needs through a fiber optic network. “ Contour ” is an eminently appropriate name for this concept, which is devoid of a single flat plane or straight line. Among its intriguing features is a system for introducing cooling air into the engine compartment from the wheel wells; force-feeding air into the engine bay from the front wheel wells reduces turbulence and improves the design ’ s aerodynamic performance. A highly imaginative and thoroughly thought out concept, Contour is a mockup and does not have a working drivetrain. It is finished in dark Sapphire Pearl with a light blue leather trimmed interior. The left doors open using a keypad entry system to display the full interior, and the right side doors are fixed. The hood opens to show the mockup T-Drive and the front wheels steer using a cable box and electric motors. Wheels are made of plastic and mount custom-treaded show tires. A concept of unusual creativity, Contour demonstrates the best and highest standards of automotive design. It is, without a doubt, unique, with an unquestioned history.
