While the introduction of the Thunderbird was Ford ’ s answer to the Corvette, the two cars were actually quite different. Corvette was designed to be America ’ s sports car, while the Thunderbird chose to forge a new path as a personal luxury automobile. With more power and a better-engineered ride, the Thunderbird appeared more sophisticated.

Thunderbird ’ s final year for subtle design changes was 1957 and it is believed by many to be the best example of the first generation series. Styling was freshened with an updated front grille and a snappy new rear quarter treatment with sporty looking fins. The rear deck was restyled once again with the spare tire positioned vertically in the trunk to provide ample room for storage – a hindrance found on earlier Thunderbirds.

List price for the 1957 Thunderbird was $3,607 for the hardtop and $3,681 for the convertible. A total of 21,380 Thunderbirds were produced, a significant increase from 1956. In retrospect, the 1957 Thunderbirds have become the most admired by collector car enthusiasts for their elegant styling and mechanical refinement.

The 1957 Thunderbird offered here in Azure Blue has gone through a no-expense-spared, concours quality restoration completed in 2005. The Thunderbird was put to the test the following summer and passed with flying colors when it achieved an AACA First Grand National win in 2005. Still in absolutely outstanding condition throughout, it has fantastic brightwork and chrome, the glass is perfect and the seats and carpet are excellent. This exquisite automotive icon retains its original 312 cubic inch V8 engine and four-barrel carburetor combination that produces 245 horsepower as well as its Ford-O-Matic transmission. Other desirable features include the original Town & Country Radio, power brakes, engine dress-up kit, correct wide whitewall tires with steel wheels and stainless steel wheel covers. The Thunderbird even comes complete with the desirable porthole top and all instruments and gauges are in excellent working condition.

Considering this 1957 Thunderbird ’ s very attractive appearance, desirable options, performance and outstanding restoration, any discerning collector or Thunderbird enthusiast would be remiss not to consider such a fine example.
