1957 was the third and final year for the sophisticated and luxurious first generation Thunderbird, and many believe it to be the best. Styling was freshened with an updated grille and front end and a snappy new rear quarter treatment with sporty looking fins, termed “ high-canted fenders ” by Ford. Larger 14-inch wheels rounded out the luxurious modifications.

Ford offered naturally aspirated Thunderbird V8s in four horsepower ratings, ranging from 212 to 285 horsepower. The rarest and most desirable of these is the "dual quad" E-code engine fitted to the example offered here. Referred to as E-Birds, these special cars offered more horsepower than any other small block V8. In fact, they even surpassed Chevrolet ’ s fuel injected 283, albeit by only two horsepower.

The three-owner 1957 E-Code Thunderbird pictured here is a particularly unique example. It has undergone a full frame-off restoration within the last seven years. The quality of its eye catching Coral Sand paint is great, as is the Colonial White top complete with standard porthole and matching interior. The same can be said for the chrome and brightwork. Side vents and wire wheels shod in whitewall tires are a definite necessity on this car. The engine bay is quite stunning and the distinctive air cleaner perched atop the E-Code 312 reminds the onlooker that this Thunderbird ’ s color is in no way indicative of what sits under the hood. The V8 is in turn mated to a three-speed manual transmission. True to its luxurious outfitting, however, power steering, power brakes, and an optional dealer-installed “ Bird ’ s Nest ” rumble seat are also present. The air conditioning is described as ice-cold and the Town & Country radio functions beautifully as well.

Motor Trend editor Don McDonald once remarked, “ Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the new Ford Thunderbird is the clever wedding of sports car functionalism with American standards of comfort. ” This dual functionality made for an unbeatable package when combined with the powerful and desirable E-Code engine. This E-Bird is therefore ideal for the enthusiast seeking the flashy glamour of a Coral Sand paintjob but who also desires a little extra power, courtesy of a dual quad V8.
