Founded in 1901, the now legendary Indian Motorcycle Company experienced a nearly immediate and tremendous surge of success, on and off the racetrack, making it the primary competitor for Harley-Davidson in the early 20th century.

The 1912 Indian Single-Cylinder motorcycle offered here from the Uihlein Collection displays a very presentable older restoration. Specifications and features appear to be in correct original order, with the exception of the black frame, which would have originally been painted Indian Red. Otherwise, the Indian is a fascinating motorcycle from a bygone era, complete with Indian ’ s numerous technological advances of the day, including an improved muffler, “ twist-of-the-wrist ” controls, sure-tight gasoline cut-off, and a reinforced frame. As fitted on all other Indian models, a “ substantial folding stand ” was present and an improved Indian-Mesinger saddle supported the rider. Of particular interest is the metal toolbox attached to the top of the frame, which contained “ necessary tools and repair outfit ” . Notably, the Indian has recently been started and run proved to be in good overall operating condition.

An Indian of this year and model is sure to delight the enthusiast whose appreciation of American motorcycle history simply demands that this Single-Cylinder be preserved and enjoyed.
