Playing with the big dogs in the mid-1950s required an abundance of gadgetry and the all-new 1956 Lincoln Premiere did not disappoint; it made such features as power steering, brakes, windows and seats standard fare. Factory options included push-button lubrication, automatic headlight dimmer, heater, radio, and power antenna. Additionally, the Premiere stood at the forefront of the industry with its tubeless tires and wraparound windshield. In fact, the design itself signaled a new wave in Lincoln ’ s forward-thinking concepts and the final push past the rather dated designs of the immediate postwar era.

This design, combined with its generous options and relatively inexpensive price of $4,747, made the Lincoln Premiere an enormously popular car with the American public. Even more appealing was the Convertible Coupe, of which only 2,447 were produced and a limited few still exist. The Premiere offered here is an absolutely beautiful example that has undergone a complete frame-off restoration. As such, it is presented in excellent condition with 58,713 miles. Its exterior is of special interest, as it is painted in the rather rare Wisteria color and is complemented by a white convertible top. The lavender color is tastefully accented by the Premiere ’ s unobtrusive design and relatively limited use of chrome. The effect is quite elegant and very attractive – so attractive, in fact, that Elvis Presley purchased an identical Wisteria Premiere in 1956. The interior has been properly upholstered to match the exterior and showcases the same degree of careful craftsmanship. With respect to the engine bay, the presence of an original, nicely restored and well maintained 6-liter V8 sporting a four-barrel carburetor is a welcome sight indeed. As all Premieres, this car lacks few amenities. Standard power steering, brakes, windows, and front seat as well as automatic transmission provide for a truly luxurious and enjoyable ride. Unfortunately, the Lincoln Premiere is commonly overlooked in light of the success of its pricier older brother, the Continental. Nevertheless, it continues to delight those enthusiasts who recognize the Premiere ’ s ability to deliver every imaginable comfort and appreciate its rarity in the collector car marketplace. After all, this was a convertible befitting even The King
