The engineers at the Bavarian Motor Works did not invent the phrase “ form follows function ” . But as Motor Trend magazine put it, “ Among all the world ’ s automakers, BMW is perhaps the foremost practitioner of the philosophy. ” There is nothing on a BMW that does not contribute in some way to performance, safety, or comfort. The 1973 2002 tii being presented is the epitome of these philosophies.

This car was a key component in putting BMW on the automotive map as a car company committed to mass producing well thought out and enjoyable sport sedans. In 1971, the tii variant of the 2002 was introduced to North Americans, sporting wider wheels, bigger brakes and a four-speed gearbox as standard equipment.

Period automotive journalists commented that below 4000rpm the tii behaved much like the previous 2002 however from 4000 to redline the tii took off “ like a scalded dog! ” This burst of power was a result of the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system, which added 30 pound feet of torque above the standard carbureted system between 4000 and 4700 rpm, while meeting ever stringent emissions regulations.

The 1973 BMW 2002 tii pictured here has been the recipient of an extensive restoration, making it one of the finest examples extant. Every detail has been addressed and nothing has been forgotten. A thorough inspection of this BMW reveals that all the typical eye sores normally overlooked when restoring a car of this nature have not been ignored, but instead replaced with proper original equipment parts, such as rubber gaskets and molding. The entire car ’ s brightwork, including all of its glass and its unique round tail lights are in equally excellent, like-new condition. This particular car is red with a black vinyl interior and has a four-speed gearbox, twin mirrors, and 13-inch painted steel wheels shod with new period correct tires.

The 2002 tii perfectly embodies the same characteristics that make BMW the undisputed leader in the luxury sport sedan market today – smart good looks, exceptional build quality and the most rewarding driving experience a enthusiast could ask for, from a car that is equally adept on the morning commute as it is doing laps of the Nürburgring.
