The domestic auto industry in the 1950s was characterized by new and exciting designs that retained well- established traditional American qualities. Buick in particular capitalized on the family-oriented station wagon craze by introducing a car that occupied the upper end of that market – the Century Caballero Estate Wagon. Featuring distinct Buick styling cues as well the Century line ’ s most powerful V8 motor to date, the Caballero was practical yet quick. 1957 and 1958 proved to be the only years for the Caballero, however, as its steep construction costs resulted in the project ’ s abandonment along with the Century name the following year. Although the Century badge would be revived later on, the Caballero was relegated to those two short years. For 1959, Buick already had a brand-wide revamping of design and image in the works. As a result, the Caballero holds a uniquely rare position within the earlier generation of Buick automobiles.

Of the few Century Caballeros known to exist, the one featured here is among the finest and most rare. It was restored to a very high standard cosmetically and mechanically. The red and white exterior is in excellent condition as are the four wire wheels and period-correct whitewall tires. Four Ventiports, as opposed to three, are typical of Buick ’ s more powerful and high-end V8 engines. The chrome sweepspear that extends the length of the body is also quite common of the marque. The same level of professional workmanship extends through to the “ smartly tailored interior ” which features matching red and white upholstery. Power windows and seats were standard equipment and function perfectly. The engine bay and bored-out 364 cubic inch engine are clean, well- restored, and proper in every regard. Special features on this car include factory air conditioning and a spotlight.

In the 1950s, the Series 60 Century, like the Centurys that preceded it, was considered Buick ’ s performance model. As GM ’ s only hardtop station wagon of the era, the Caballero benefited from the Century ’ s name and power but remained true to its family-oriented purpose. Observing a Buick Caballero of this caliber cross the auction block is a rare sight indeed.
