1953 marked the 50th anniversary of Buick, a motor company that, despite its humble origins in Flint, Michigan, had developed into a powerhouse within the greater General Motors Corporation and a maker of luxurious automobiles. To mark the occasion, three specialty convertibles were introduced in limited production, each representative of the marque ’ s leadership in forward-thinking design. Compared to its Oldsmobile Fiesta and Cadillac Eldorado counterparts, 1,690 Buick Skylarks were produced despite their rather steep price of $5,000.

The success of the Skylark was undoubtedly due to its numerous trendsetting features, such as V8 power, a 12- volt electrical system, full cutout wheel openings, and stylish “ sweepspear ” chrome body accents, which would find their way onto future Buick models. Equally impressive was the car ’ s construction, which, although related to the Roadmaster model, bears body paneling unique to the Skylark, and was virtually handmade. In fact, a sportier stance was achieved by lowering the top and seating position merely a few inches. Today, ownership of all three convertibles is considered the “ Triple Crown ” among automotive enthusiasts and an enviable acquisition of considerable historic value.

The 1953 Buick Skylark pictured here is an excellent, highly original example that has just recently completed a no expense spared concours quality restoration. Having been a very straight and solid unrestored example with low mileage, the Skylark was the ideal foundation for this type of comprehensive body-off restoration. Even so, nothing was left to chance and absolutely every single piece of this car received the restorer ’ s attention.

After being properly stripped and prepped, the body was refinished in the brilliant and correct 1953 Skylark color, Osage Cream. Accordingly, the chassis and underbody were refinished to uncompromised levels of quality and as a result they display an astute consideration to detail, right down to the factory correct white inner fenders. All the interior and exterior chrome and stainless was either triple plated or polished to show quality standards. The Skylark exclusive trim, ornaments and badges are all correct; where new old stock replacements could not be found, the originals were professionally refurbished.

The fully restored interior was refinished in red and white, which is correct to the original design, as was the dash, which was also restored to like new condition. In fact, the car ’ s many special features, including factory clock and radio, antenna, power top and windows all function like new.

This Skylark does not fall short in any regard, as it features Buick ’ s first overhead valve V8 'Nail Head' in beautifully restored condition with every correct decal, hose clamp, and wiring clip in place, all of which is detailed to show standards. Extending to the rear of the car, the trunk was also restored to original specifications with all the correct finishes and materials. The Skylark is also equipped with a brand new and correct set of Kelsey Hayes chrome wire wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires.

Overall, this particular 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible is in virtually flawless condition and is without doubt concours ready. From its beautiful grille to its trendsetting curvaceous design, the Skylark was truly a luxury convertible with styling to be admired and desired. Being part of the coveted “ Triple Crown ” , this Skylark presents a rare opportunity to own a part of General Motors ’ Golden Anniversary and a crucial milestone in Buick ’ s history, exemplified in uncompromised elegance.
