Unveiled at the 1993 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Plymouth Prowler was an instant classic and a milestone for American automotive design. According to Chrysler, “ The Prowler [was] Plymouth ’ s tribute to a truly original American art form: the street rod. ” Conceived by Chrysler ’ s inspired designers in California and green-lighted by Bob Lutz shortly thereafter, the Prowler enjoyed a healthy production run from 1997 until the discontinuation of the Plymouth marque in 2001. It was subsequently revived under the Chrysler name for the 2002 model year. Of particular interest is the Prowler ’ s tasteful fusion of classic American design and modern technology. In addition to its 253 horsepower V6 and abundant use of lightweight materials, this modern retro-rod was bathed in an aluminum body reminiscent of the stylish open-wheel roadsters of the 1930s.

The Prowler featured here is an excellent example, not only for its rarity but also its condition. With only 78 original miles, this jaw-dropping car is among the 1,436 Chrysler Prowlers produced in 2002 and one of only 301 examples finished in Deep Candy Red. The paint, chrome, and black canvas top are all in excellent condition, as is the Agate leather-trimmed interior, complete with matching instrument bezel. The Prowler ’ s minimal road usage is evident in the engine bay as well, where the EGJ V6 and its matching components are in new condition. All imaginable factory options are present, including power windows and door locks, a 320-watt sound system with six-disc CD changer, and a matching rear-end inspired trailer still in its original factory crating. Front to back, this Prowler is generously outfitted and very well maintained.

Despite their relatively short production runs and limited numbers, these particular roadsters left an indelible mark on the American automotive industry. At a time when Detroit ’ s automotive designs needed a breath of fresh air, Chrysler spearheaded a movement that not only reintroduced an American standard but also gave rise to an immediate cult following. Perhaps no one said it better than former Chairman Bob Eaton who remarked, “ It ’ s for real, and you either get it or you don ’ t. ”
