The Ford GT-40 has remained the stuff of adolescent racing dreams for over four decades. Four consecutive wins at Le Mans between 1966 and 1969 secured its place in the pantheon of endurance racing. Since 2004 those dreams have been more readily available in South Africa at Cape Advanced Vehicles. Nearly identical to the GT- 40 in most regards and bearing only minor comfort and safety modifications, CAV ’ s GT remains true to its namesake by offering the same level of race-bred Ford performance but in a more practical package. Every GT is hand-built in Cape Town by meticulous craftsmen and subsequently shipped to one of eight distributors around the world. With an extensive waiting list and a 600-hour production timeframe, the CAV GT remains relatively rare on American roads and racetracks.

This particular GT was purchased four years ago from HRE Motorcar in Freeport, New York and is titled as a 1966 model. It has only 780 original miles and is cosmetically flawless in and out. Simple yet sporty Titanium Silver paint bathes the vinyl ester resin body. The stainless-steel monocoque chassis rides on original Halibrand-style knock-off wheels. The interior retains original wool carpeting, as per Ford design, but features adjustable seats and pedal box as well as added comforts in the form of black leather upholstery and air conditioning. The sprint to sixty lasts only 4.5 seconds, courtesy of a 345 horsepower Ford V8 sporting a Holley four-barrel carburetor. This engine is mated to a Getrag five-speed gearbox and has an original-style “ Bundle of Snakes ” eight branch header system. Meanwhile, all that power is brought to a standstill via aluminum Wilwood calipers. Coil-over shocks with adjustable damping rate and variable spring height round out the aggressive performance setup.

One glance at the CAV GT evokes images of Dan Gurney and Jacky Ickx bringing Italy ’ s prancing horse to submission. It is fitting therefore that one such GT was the pace car at this year ’ s Le Mans historic series. True to its heritage, the GT is ideal for the driver who recognizes its proven potential and intends to exercise it.
