During the late 1940s, while Donald Healey ’ s operation remained small, Austin had become known to American motorists as a major British producer of quaint little sedans, long popular in England and gaining surprising favor on the west side of the Atlantic. After winning the design award at the 1952 Earl ’ s Court motor show, Healey joined forces with Austin to create a brand new sports car. By the end of the decade, Austin-Healeys had become very popular in America as a result of their reasonable price and attractive appearance, coupled with a tough and well-proven engine. While other manufacturers attempted to compete with their own versions based after the early marques, the Austin-Healeys were in a class by themselves.

About 16,000 four-cylinder Austin-Healeys were built over a four-year period. Powered by an engine enlarged from 2,639cc to 2,912cc, the 3000 was an immediate success – both commercially and in competition. While there was a difference of only a seven horsepower between the earlier 100/6 and the new 3000, the engine gained 18 lb-ft of torque, a 12 percent increase that was immediately apparent in the driver ’ s back.

The BMIHT certified 3000 MKI offered here has benefited from a complete frame-off, no-expenses-spared restoration performed exclusively for this auction by marque specialists Healey Lane of Riverside, California. It was repainted in its original and striking high contrast color scheme, Vanilla over Ebony. The four-speed transmission and carburetors were completely rebuilt; a new fuel system, exhaust system, fuel pump, and brake lines have also been installed. The interior has received the same caring attention and was fitted with new carpets, seat foam, a panel kit, tonneau cover, and a steering wheel, while the original gauges were recalibrated.

The Austin-Healey is in outstanding, showroom new condition with only a few test miles on the odometer to ensure the work performed was of the highest quality. Additionally, as a tribute to the quality and confidence of Healey Lane, the Healey is also being offered with a drivetrain warranty by the restorer. (For details regarding the conditions of the warranty please contact an RM Specialist prior to the auction or onsite during the sale.)

Having just completed its thorough restoration, this Austin-Healey features all the attributes that made the 3000 so successful in the 1950s and 1960s, and is a must have for either collector or enthusiast.
