BMW found itself in financial distress by the end of the 1950s. In a bold attempt to develop a new corporate image, the Bavarian Motor Works sought a fresh design from Turin, Italy. The project of restyling the BMW 502 Salon was handed to Giuseppe “ Nuccio ” Bertone in 1960. The result of this collaboration was the 3200 CS. From a design standpoint, the car was a resounding success for BMW. With aid of his chief stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Bertone succeeded in creating a beautifully proportioned two door, four seater, high performance model built on the 502 chassis introduced in 1957. After prototypes of the car were unveiled at the 1961 IAA Frankfurt show, Giugiaro ’ s team at Bertone started construction on the approved design in February of 1962. The 3200 CS had a torquey 3.2-liter V8, a very elegant interior and, with a production run of only 596 examples, was BMW ’ s flagship until 1965. This particular 3200 CS is one of only ten known to exist in the United States. For the past 25 years it has been garaged and driven only to and from local car shows. It remains in original and very good unrestored condition with relatively low mileage. In 2004 it was one of only four classic BMW coupes invited to the Beverly Hills Hotel by BMW North America to celebrate the launch of the new 6-Series. Its beautifully maintained white exterior is accented by minor but very notable decorations. The dogleg bend found on the C-pillar, now a BMW staple, was first introduced on the 3200. Vertically elongated “ kidney ” grilles define the front end, which also features a simple wrap-around bumper. The interior, complete with brown leather upholstery and wood dash, is equally pleasing and remains in very good original condition. The engine compartment, mechanicals, power brakes, and wiring are described as being in great running condition, as are the optional power windows. The original owner ’ s manual, warranty ticket, and service booklet are also included. This is an excellent 3200, ideal for the BMW aficionado who appreciates the rolling artwork of Italy ’ s design houses. Perhaps Bertone was most accurate in stating that they had created a “ sober but exceedingly elegant car for BMW ” .
