277hp, 3.5 liter twin-cam six-cylinder engine, five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel vented disc brakes. Wheelbase: 100.8"

The M1 is without a doubt the most exotic BMW street car ever built. Essentially a homologation special, the M1 was a limited-production, virtually hand built car with a tube frame and state-of-the-art technology. The 24 valve, fuel-injected 277 horsepower engine produced six second 0-60 performance. Designed by ItalDesign ’ s Guigiaro, the M1 ’ s slick lines and distinctive shape made it instantly recognizable. Of the 456 total production models constructed, only 41 examples were built in 1979. The M1, however, remains timeless and tremendously important as the lynchpin to the M division ’ s early and future successes.

The M1 featured here is a particularly interesting example. It was delivered in 1980 by Styling Garage Spezialkarosserien of Hamburg with numerous cosmetic modifications reminiscent of the all-out racing M1s. As such it was a very unique car, delivered to the former Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani. It subsequently returned to Germany in the 1980s and made its way across the pond shortly thereafter, where it has remained ever since.

It is presented unrestored and original to the age of its customization. The white paint, with its typical blue and red BMW race striping, is well maintained and in good condition. The same can be said for the BBS wheels and the extensive bodywork. The white leather interior features a matching red, white, and black pattern and is in good condition, exhibiting normal wear for its age. Meanwhile, the inline six-cylinder engine, mounted amidships, benefits from a great set of stainless steel headers. Other than minor cosmetic changes, however, the engine compartment appears to be in original condition. Notable additional features include air conditioning, power brakes, and a custom stereo system. The engine is crisp, powerful, and shifts through the gears very nicely.

Featuring the original Porsche-pounding straight-six M engine, the M1 is truly the car that started it all for BMW. The M1 presented here is an excellent driver with a fascinating history to boot. As such, it affords the potential owner a piece of BMW ’ s glorious racing history, ready for the street yet reminiscent of the track. As this is a modern car by EPA/DOT standards, please check with an RM Auctions representative regarding its eligibility for registration in California.
