The Kellison coupe was, without doubt, the wildest, most extreme design ever put into production. An aerospace engineer (sometimes described as a “ rocket scientist ” ) Kellison built bodies that reflected his engineering background: carefully designed, over engineered and full featured with details like sealing strips, wheel wells, firewalls and dashboards molded in. The streamlined shape and low frontal area made the Kellison coupe a favorite on the salt flats. A variety of chassis – Kellison even offered its own four inch diameter twin-tube chassis – could be used, but the easiest and best developed of the breed was the solid axle Corvette.

And what a car it made, as exemplified by this outstanding Corvette-based Kellison coupe. Powered by a newer, more modern 302 cu. in. Chevrolet engine with four-barrel carburetor and four-speed manual transmission, it is finished in white with a blue stripe like the Cunningham team Corvettes. It is a crowd-stopping missile. Weighing hundreds of pounds less than a stock Corvette, its performance is exhilarating, especially with the engine and gearbox set well back from the stock location for better balance and handling. It carries a Corvette chassis number and full GM running gear with 15-inch ET alloy wheels and appears to be based on a 1962 Corvette. The interior is black Naugahyde with blue piping that matches the body stripe. The instrument cluster appears to be stock 1962 Vette, with 160mph speedometer. Some features of the body, including the large, wide air intake and molded-in roof reinforcing rib, attest to the continuing development that Kellison incorporated in its products. This 1962 Kellison coupe has been restored to driving condition, encouraging its next owner to take full advantage of its lightweight performance and the reliability and parts availability that its Corvette mechanicals provide. The current vendor reports having executed a thorough detail as well as replacing the Plexiglas windshield to further enhance the visibility at high speed driving.

Its dramatic, low-slung looks will stop traffic as well today as it did at the L.A. Auto Show in 1958 where Griff Borgeson observed in Sports Cars Illustrated, “ In any 10 minutes around the Kellison exhibit, you could collect adjectives to last a lifetime. They were emotionally-charged ones such as brutal, beautiful, sexy, voluptuous… it acts like a magnet on the eyeballs of the masses. Moving, it disrupts traffic; parked it draws marveling crowds that are stunned by its appearance, [and] its incredible lowness... ”
