The 23rd Series Packards of 1950 marked the 50th Golden Anniversary of the prestigious American automaker. As expected, there were numerous design and trim additions included to help differentiate the lineup. However, aside from these they remained largely unchanged from previous years. Notably, 1949 marked the first year an eight-cylinder powerplant was standard on all cars. In 1950 Packard continued to employ the now standard eight–cylinder engines that would force designers back to the drawing boards to continue with further developments, however this time they would be drastic body changes that would be introduced at the close of the 1950 model year. The 1950 Packard Station Sedan was the last year that Packard produced a wagon. During the years 1948-1950 less than 3000 were made. It featured the famous Packard straight 288 cubic inch 135 horsepower eight-cylinder engine and a 120-inch wheelbase. The body of the station sedan shared the same body panels as the regular sedan, however the roof, upper rear panels and the tailgate are unique to the model. The very attractive 1950 Packard Standard Woodie Wagon presented here in blue with a brown interior was purchased by the current owner from actor John Schneider, a.k.a. Bo Duke of the Dukes of Hazzard. The Packard was lovingly restored by the Alan Taylor Company in Escondido, California and Only Yesterday Classic Autos in San Diego, California. The fit and finish is outstanding and the wood looks striking against the bright blue body paint. The Woodie Wagon is equipped with a number of desirable features including a sun visor, fog lamps, dual interior controlled spot lamps and the famous cormorant hood ornament. This Packard Woodie has been on loan to the San Diego Automotive Museum and has won numerous awards including Best in Class and the People ’ s Favorite at the prestigious La Jolla Motor Car Classic in 2005. Still in outstanding show quality condition, with no evidence that the previous owner ever slid across its hood, climbed in and out through the windows, or evaded police by jumping the car over ravines and construction sites, this Packard would be a crowd pleaser at any show.
