One of the most exciting specialty cars to come out of the 1960s was the Apollo GT. It was one of the first attempts to marry a small-block American-built V8 engine and transmission to the sleek beauty of an Italian- designed and built sports car. This was at a time when the likes of Carroll Shelby was putting together the first Sunbeam Tigers and his legendary Cobras. For the Apollo, designers Ron Plescia and Franco Scaglione were retained and the final product was built by Carrozzeria Intermeccanica. In 1964, the Vetta Ventura, produced by Vanguard Motors in Dallas, Texas, took over where the Apollo left off.

Starting with same basic body, they created their own sport coupe, the Vetta Ventura, often referred to as the "Texas Apollo". Even though the cars looked similar, they used unique frames, suspension and drivelines. Over a period of two years, just 19 examples of the Vetta Ventura were produced, and each was custom hand assembled, almost guaranteeing that there would be no two exactly alike.

Unique is a word that describes the Vetta Ventura coupe offered here, as this was the prototype coupe and as such features several body modifications not seen of the other production models. Featuring flared wheel wells and what appears to be a wider stance, this is not only a sleek looking car, but also one that the vendor tells us loves to perform on the open road. Finished in spectacular Fly Yellow, its interior is fitted with black bucket seats trimmed in yellow piping. The rear features diamond pleated padding and proper luggage straps to stow gear for a long holiday cruise. Full instrumentation from Stewart-Warner gauges keep the driver informed of his machine's condition, with original toggle switches lined up on the padded dashboard.

Creative designs of the 1960s by the maverick style car marker often caught the eye of the "big boys", and the styling, flair and trendsetting stance of the Vette Ventura can be found in several other sports and production cars of the era. Values of the original Apollos have been escalating at a rapid pace, and this is a rare opportunity to own a very special and advanced edition of that legendary car.
