For 1966, Carroll Shelby ’ s GT350s benefited from a host of mechanical revisions that smoothed out the rough edges of a car, which, to many of its drivers, felt too much like a road-going race car. Resultant sales increased considerably to 2,380 examples, thanks to Peyton Cramer ’ s pitch to Hertz Rental Car Company. Shelby ’ s skilled marketing guru was asked to bring in larger-scale fleet sales for the company; he returned from Hertz with an order for 1,000 cars!

The Hertz Corporation had decided to jump on the performance bandwagon, certainly the major automotive marketing mantra of the mid-1960s. Hertz, as a brave marketing concept, had previously created “ The Hertz Sports Car Club ” intending to provide a limited number of high performance rentals to customers “ over 25 and qualified to handle such vehicles ” . In reality, any young lead foot with his dad ’ s credit card was likely “ qualified ” . For a unique identity, most of the Hertz GT350s were liveried in black with gold stripes. Some of the earlier GT350-H cars had four-speed transmissions, but after checking in more than a few rental returns with burned and slipping clutches, some with bits of racing numbers still stuck to the doors, the majority of later cars came equipped with automatic transmissions.

The GT350-H featured here is a proper and quite original example of one of the most interesting chapters in the motorsport saga of Carroll Shelby. It left Shelby ’ s operation on April 17, 1966 bound for Dallas, Texas, where it was one of few “ rent-a-racers ” sold new by Norm Williams Ford to Hertz. After a short list of owners, it arrived in California where it has been garage-kept. The black exterior is in great condition as it received a bare-metal repaint within the last three years. The body is described as being very straight and rust-free throughout. All exterior components and features have been restored to period-correct specifications. The interior remains largely original and does not detract from the GT350-H ’ s overall presence. With respect to the car ’ s mechanicals, a complete rebuild of the engine, transmission, and suspension was conducted five years ago, rendering the car a solid and reliable driver. It has since accumulated approximately 1,500 miles.

Although a four-speed gearbox is currently mated to the 289 V8, the original automatic transmission has been made available with this car. It should be noted that most other items replaced during restoration, including the original wheels and ignition, are concurrently included with this GT350. Also present are very detailed records of the car ’ s maintenance and restoration, including invoices for engine, body, and transmission work, restoration records from California dating back to 1989, and an original owner ’ s manual. Of particular interest is a bill of sale, detailing the car ’ s original delivery and option costs; the addition of “ Hertz special wheels ” and an optional radio brought the grand total to $3,792.25.

In recent years, Hertz has reinstated its partnership with Shelby American to once again bring black-gold GT350s back on American roads. In this light, the original GT350 has gained even greater esteem in the eyes of its admirers, who delight in the notion of a rentable Shelby sports car but recognize its continued ability to win on road and track. Given this heritage the GT350-H has proven its staying power from instant classic to timeless sports car.
