While there are more than a few high-end luxury car manufacturers in the world, there's really only one that is undisputed as the world's finest automaker Rolls Royce. From Alabama to Abu Dhabi, the name is universally recognized as the symbol of uncompromising quality and extravagant luxury. To the handful of people fortunate enough to be able to afford one of these magnificent motorcars, the reward is a driving experience unlike any other. For the rest of us, well, perhaps waiting 25 years for them to become affordable is the best way to sample the good life. This 1988 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur is a gorgeous example of the Crewe factory's art. All Rolls-Royce vehicles are custom-tailored to their owner's expectations, and the original owner of this one had the impeccable taste to select black with a brilliant red leather interior and a black padded roof. If there's a more striking, elegant, and beautiful combination, it hasn't been discovered yet. With just 86,018 original miles from new and a recent and extensive servicing, this beautiful motorcar is ready to drive and enjoy today. The Silver Spur was the long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit, introduced in 1980. Never known for being a follower of fashion, Rolls Royce did not chase trends and their cars have remained largely hand-assembled to this day. The design was elegant and not flashy, which was exactly what Rolls Royce customers expected. That careful dedication to craftsmanship, as well as knowing intimately the expectations of their clientele, resulted in exceptional motorcars that fit together beautifully, and paint that was the equal of any car on the concours show field. As a clean, never damaged vehicle, this particular Silver Spur's beautiful condition bears out the quality of the original work, and the paint remains deep and glossy. The doors open and close with a precision that has to be experienced to be believed, and panel alignment is the result of one very fussy gentleman sweating the details until everything was exactly right. Even after almost 25 years, this car still feels tight and looks lavishly expensive. Lavishly expensive not only describes the purchase price of a new Rolls Royce, but the demands of one that has been neglected. Supremely reliable under most conditions, many of these cars fell into the hands of owners who were less than dedicated to following the Crewe standards of ownership. As a result, there are inexpensive Rolls Royces out there which will cost two or even three times their purchase price in repairs and maintenance to make them right. That's why it is always best to purchase a properly maintained example that has been kept properly from day one like this one has. Recent receipts for an extensive servicing are included with the vehicle, giving you confidence that this is a pedigreed Rolls Royce and not a bargain-hunter's disaster waiting to happen. Performance from the "six and three-quarter" liter V8 is impressive, and as is traditional, Rolls Royce only rated horsepower as "adequate." Bosch fuel injection was standard by 1989, improving torque and throttle response, as well as smoothness and efficiency. The engine bay looks as complicated as the inner workings of a watch, but at the heart is a pushrod V8 that moves the big car effortlessly with barely a whisper to be heard inside. Rolls Royce engineers went to great lengths to isolate the mechanical workings from passengers, and as a result, the engine is highly refined, going about its business with a minimum of fuss. The only transmission you could get with your new Rolls Royce was a smooth-shifting automatic which drives a rear end that looks big enough to have been a part of a steam locomotive. The fully independent suspension has a self-leveling feature that keeps the big sedan on an even keel no matter what the load, and the exhaust system controls noise while letting the big V8 breathe properly. Polished alloy wheels are the lone extravagance on the exterior, amply subdued by recent blackwall radials. Inside, you'll find a leather-lined luxury cocoon that has to be experienced to be understood. The acres of leather is as fragrant as it is beautifully stitched, and the bold black piping stands out against the red seating surfaces for an elegant, almost sporty look. That wood you see on the dashboard and elsewhere is real wood, hand-fitted to the car and sanded by guys who have probably been doing this since the factory was lit by gas lanterns. The big steering wheel is a holdover from the days when cars had no power steering, and this one steers easily with just your fingertips. In back, space is commodious, thanks to the Spur's extended wheelbase-there's no question that most owners were driven in these cars, leaving the work to a paid professional. And notice the burled walnut tray tables built into the back of the front seats and the foot rests underneath-what a great way to travel! These cars aren't for everyone, but if you are someone who appreciates impeccable workmanship and unparalleled luxury, even a 1988 Rolls Royce is something very special. It won't be confused for anything else on the road thanks to the big, upright grille and restrained styling, and inside the only place that might be as luxurious is the men's lounge at an exclusive club in England. With service receipts and a clean ownership history, this is a Rolls Royce you can purchase and drive with confidence. This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
