Even so, its shortcomings were apparent even to Porsche, and by the early 1960s, it was obvious basic changes were needed. With a slightly longer wheelbase and a slippery body shape, the new generation Porsche was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, and entered production in 1964 as the 911. The 911 convertible was called Targa - so named for Porches successes in the celebrated Sicilian race, the Targa Florio. Targa models feature a rubberized top that clamped into the windshield frame and to the stainless steel roll hoop. Finished in brushed stainless steel, the hoop served not only as a styling element, but more importantly as a safety and performance necessity. As a structural extension of the B-pillar, it provided the rigidity and roll over protection that a full cabriolet version would have lacked. 9111210188: Recently discovered in a barn in Northern Alabama, this survivor-example 911 Targa makes an excellent restoration prospect for any Porsche enthusiast. Resting for almost 22 years, this 911 is very complete and well equipped. This particular example is accompanied by the factory tool kit, jack, spare, radio, and upholstery, engine, and 5-speed transmission. Only 935 911E Targas were ever produced.
