If you like your cars traditional with a twist, take another look at this 1964 Chevrolet Bel Air coupe. With a laser straight body, traditional white paint, a trick Air Ride suspension and staggered wheels, it's a great combination of old and new that's simply a blast to drive. Ermine White was a popular color in 1964, and for good reason-it looks great on the stylish Chevy sheetmetal. Nicely finished to original standards, this car fits together cleanly and shows signs of careful work. No wholesale panel replacements, and it's pretty clear from looking in all the nooks and crannies that this car has been nicely maintained all its life. The only modification is a trick notch in the rocker panel for the side exhaust just ahead of the rear tires, and if you look at the workmanship, you can see that this is much more than just a cut and paste job. A red stripe along the body side molding really sets off the white paint, giving the car a racy, '60s look that prevents all that Ermine White from being overpowering. All the chrome is in very good condition, including the front and rear bumpers, and the original grille is excellent. Inside there's a simple tan bench seat interior, which, like the exterior, has a few upgrades that make it unique. The seats have obviously been reupholstered in the original style, along with the door panels and carpets. The dash still holds the original speedometer, but it is augmented by a steering column mounted tachometer and a billet wheel wrapped in matching tan leather. Controls for the air suspension hang underneath, and there's a separate switch for each corner, so it is extremely flexible and versatile. A powerful Pioneer stereo system has been added, with speakers in the kick panels and on the package shelf. And who doesn't dig the shifter for the 4-speed sticking up out of the transmission tunnel and topped with a chrome knob? In back, the trunk is finished in spatter paint and holds the air tank, control valves, and compressor for the air suspension. The engine bay holds a very stock-appearing 283 cubic inch small block, complete down to the "ram's horn" exhaust manifolds. Subtle changes include the gray paint on the original air cleaner and valve covers, which contrasts nicely with the Chevy Orange paint on the block and heads. Up front, the original radiator still keeps it cool along with the stock fan shroud, and a modern alternator delivers the juice. For safety, the original single master cylinder has been upgraded to a power dual-reservoir unit that feeds front disc brakes. The engine is backed by a T-10 4-speed manual transmission that's a pleasure to stir through the gears and has a positive, mechanical feel like a bolt-action rifle. The floors and chassis are extremely clean with no rust or accident damage, and that custom-fabricated side exhaust system sounds absolutely killer. And, of course, there's the air suspension, which gives you the flexibility of choosing an "in the weeds" look for show, or raising it up to clear steep driveway aprons and for comfortable cruising. The finishing touch is a staggered set of polished Coys boasting 18's in the front & 20's in the back that fill the wheel wells yet look traditional. Cars like this are the backbone of the collector car hobby. Easy to buy, easy to work on, and reliable enough to be fun without any headaches, they transport us to a different era without making too many sacrifices. With a few thoughtful upgrades, this one gets a lot of attention on the road and at shows, but the basic goodness of the original design is 100% intact. That kind of subtle blending is not easy to do, as any custom car builder will tell you. A lot of fun for not a lot of money. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
