Sometimes the strength of an organization is demonstrated by how well it responds to an error. In Chrysler's case it was the response to the Airflow. Introduced with great fanfare as the future of the automobile, the technically advanced and scientifically streamlined Airflow was received by the public with disdain that bordered on horror. Chrysler's sales nosedived. To respond, they quickly enlisted the help of industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes to refine the Airflow. To Raymond Dietrich, founder of the famed LeBaron design studio, Chrysler gave the task of quickly coming up with an attractive but largely conventional alternative to the Airflow while sharing a corporate theme. Dietrich's design for the Airstream, offered in both Chrysler eight-cylinder and DeSoto six-cylinder chassis, literally saved Chrysler Corporation. Also saved and largely original is this wonderfully preserved 1935 Chrysler CZ Airstream Eight Sedan. Finished in blue with brown cloth upholstery it embodies the design elements that made Dietrich's design both acceptable to the public and part of the Chrysler, like the raked vee grille, thin, subtle chrome trim, raked windshield, depress beam headlights in chrome teardrop shells, teardrop fenders and rear fender skirts with chrome escutcheon trim. While it has had some paint work at some time ,the interior is all original and the gauges and dashboard woodgrain are exceptionally well preserved. Features include whitewall tires, crank-out windshield, robe rail and footrests in the rear and a Phinney Walker clock in the rear view mirror. The interior wood trim is sharp and belies its age. This is a wonderful old automobile that marks an important and famed transition in Detroit history. It has been used proudly on tours where the 105hp of the 274 cubic inch Chrysler eight and superior ride and handling of the independent front suspension make it particularly satisfying. Only 9,297 Airstream Eights were built which makes this a rarely seen and very special Chrysler which its exceptional preservation only enhances.
