1928 was an important year for Chrysler. Started just four years before, Chrysler would build 160,670 cars in 1928 and added Dodge Brothers to the company. A team of Imperials finished 3rd and 4th in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France while a pair of Series 72s, similar to the example offered here, finished 3rd and 4th in the 24 hour race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Chrysler introduced its "Red Head" high compression engines, raising compression from 5.1:1 to 6.2:1 and boosting the Series 72 six-cylinder engine's power to 85 brake horsepower from the standard 75hp. Restored by Al Pruitt and Sons over a period of years for its long term owner, one of America's pioneer car collectors, it earned an AACA National First Prize in 1997 and its Senior Award seven years later in 2004, its longevity attesting to the quality, skill and pride of the restorer and the exceptional care it has received. It is distinctively liveried in colors typical of the period, maroon on the body with yellow fenders complemented by bright orange wire wheels and body side accent panel and it is still in exquisite condition. Wide whitewall tires and chrome lockrings, center caps and lug nuts further accent its presentation. Drum Depress Beam headlights are complemented by similar cowl lights. The windshield has glass windwings and folds flat. The dual sidemounts have beige cloth covers matching the beige cloth top. The interior is upholstered and trimmed in tan leather. A rumble seat, golf bag door and trunk rack complete its equipment. The engine compartment shows some signs of being run but is fresh and sharp. This is a car that can go right to the show field where its status as one of the few surviving Series 72 "Red Head" will mark it as exceptional. The performance of the 85hp "Red Head" six on the road and on tours will be even more exciting.
