Say what you want about the C4 Corvettes, but by 1992 they were incredibly potent and surprisingly comfortable cars that could and would run with some much more expensive hardware. GM's continuing investment in the Corvette ensured that it remained at the top of the performance hierarchy, and things like the LT1 engine and powerful disc brakes shaped the way the industry approached performance. Like the original 1953 Corvette, the C4 was still a trendsetter. This gorgeous 6-speed 1992 Corvette in sinister black on black leather is an amazingly well-preserved specimen that hasn't been significantly modified, raced, or abused. It shows only 17,064 original miles, and hails from sunny Georgia where the weather is always cooperative, especially when it comes to performance cars. There's just nothing that looks better than a black Corvette. And as this car ably demonstrates, the Bowling Green factory was serious about building high-quality hardware. Panel gaps are very good, panels line up well, and even that massive clamshell hood is almost entirely wave-free. Just a few years earlier, getting this kind of brilliant finish on a 'Vette usually required warranty work at a private shop. There is no significant road rash on this black missile, either, with a clean nose and rockers, and even the areas behind the wheel wells are in good shape. It takes a lot of work to keep a black car looking this good, and it's clear that the owner was fastidious about maintenance. Inside, the black leather interior is equally well preserved. The seats show some slight wear appropriate to the age and mileage, but there's just no sign of damage, fading or dryness in the leather at all. Those buckets are every bit as comfortable and supportive as they look, and GM spent a lot of money developing the Corvette's digital cockpit array. A clever combination of digital and analog gauges, it feeds the driver information in an easy-to-understand way that's visible at a glance. The low mileage and careful use have left a Corvette that's almost completely devoid of squeaks and rattles, and the doors open and close with precision. The surprisingly spacious hatchback area can carry a weeks' worth of luggage for two, and this car has obviously been stored indoors all its life, because the carpet is still black with no sign of UV damage. Notable options include automatic climate control and a CD player, both somewhat cutting-edge in 1992. 1992 was the first year of the LT1 engine which not only brought an additional 50 horsepower to the table, but innovations like reverse-flow cooling where the heads were cooled before the block, and GM's Automatic Slip Regulation (ASR) which would use a variety of tricks to reduce power to combat wheel spin and maximize traction. A simplified intake plenum left a clean, uncluttered engine bay, and this one shows signs of fastidious maintenance from day one. The engine is backed by the highly desirable 6-speed manual transmission, a ZF unit that is one of the best shifting and most durable gearboxes in the industry. With a overdrive gears on 5th and 6th, high speed cruising is effortless and this Corvette can generate some impressive fuel economy if you're gentle with your right foot. As usual, the suspension and brakes are incredibly capable, and big 17-inch tires not only look right on the C4's shape, but help it ride and handle as well as it does. These cars remain incredible performance bargains and are still extremely potent on the street. With bulletproof mechanicals and a mammoth aftermarket, a clean car like this is the perfect foundation for something really spectacular. Or if you're into showing and accuracy, there's nothing better than an unmolested, low-mileage, original car. Most experts agree that C4 prices have probably bottomed out, and the best cars with the most desirable options, are going to start seeing some upside in the very near future. Few will be better bets than a black-on-black 6-speed LT1. Call now! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom. For more information, please call (678) 279-1609 or toll free (877) 367-1835.
