The 1954 Corvettes are sometimes considered orphans. Not the "first" Corvette like the '53s, and without the V8s of the '55s, they're literally stranded in the middle. However, that isn't to say that they aren't wonderful cars to own and drive, and if you like the looks and purity of the '53s but can't afford the six-figure price tag, a '54 is virtually identical for a whole lot less cash. This beautifully restored 1954 Corvette has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration to NCRS specifications (that's the National Corvette Restorers Society, you know, the guys who can tell you exactly what kind of bolt holds the generator in place on a 1954 Corvette). Brilliantly finished in Polo White with a red vinyl interior and a tan canvas top, it's a near-perfect example of what an early Corvette should look like. The body is exceptionally well done and fits together a lot better than they did originally, but not too perfectly, because that's not how the factory did it. The paint is actually lacquer, not modern urethane, and it exactly duplicates the original finish with a soft gloss that looks very vintage and correct. Corvettes, particularly the early ones, are some of the most challenging vehicles to restore, and the NCRS standards are exacting. Even over-restoration in certain areas can be a points deduction, and restoring a car to "perfect imperfection" is a massive challenge for any restorer. Fortunately, this car was restored by experts who have handled that task brilliantly. There just can't be many 1954 Corvettes anywhere in the world nicer than this one. The chrome and other brightwork has been expertly restored as well, from the beautiful "baskets" over the headlights to the slender and wonderfully stylish rear bumpers. The only piece of glass on a '54 Corvette is the wrap-around windshield, and it is brand new and completely unmarked. The tan canvas top fits snugly thanks to upgrades in 1954, and it includes a set of matching side curtains, which was the only way the '53-54 Corvettes were available. They were definitely roadsters in the purest sense. Red vinyl was one of two choices in 1954 (the other being beige vinyl), but on a white car, it really is the only sensible selection. Stunning in execution and contrasting so vividly with the Polo White paint, this Corvette's cockpit is as accurate as it is stylish. From fresh foam under the seat covers, to the beautiful dashboard with matching instrument humps for driver and passenger, it has been expertly restored. The gauges are all rebuilt and fully functional, lined up as they are-even the clock keeps time, just as it should given the expenses involved in this restoration. The original AM radio is just above the gauges and there's just nothing like the sound of a vintage tube radio, even though there's not much music to listen to on AM stations anymore. The matching red and white steering wheel has been recast and is so pristine that you're almost afraid to touch it while you drive. To the right of your thigh is the slender, almost delicate shifter for the 2-speed PowerGlide automatic. Interestingly, although the PowerGlide transmission was a $178 option, no Corvettes with manual transmissions were built in 1954. In 1954, power still came from Chevrolet's reliable and surprisingly lusty Blue Flame inline six-cylinder engine, which was renamed the Corvette Special Six in 1954. Equipped with a trio of side-draft carburetors and exhaling through a true dual exhaust system, it made a reasonably respectable 150 horsepower. 100% matching numbers, the engine has been fully rebuilt to stock specifications and runs beautifully. The block and head are bathed in the correct blue paint, and all the little details are correct, from the hoses and clamps, to the throttle cables, to the fittings used on the fuel lines on each carburetor. This car is also one of the 20% or so 1954 Corvettes fitted with a chrome valve cover (which was installed on serial numbers 1363 through 4381), making it somewhat of a rarity among its peers. The fully restored X-frame chassis deserves to be displayed on a lift at all times. Highly detailed and accurately restored, this car shows you both how primitive the Corvette was in 1954, and how the factory finished them. Forget shiny body-colored floors, everything is the correct satin black, and the front suspension is similar to what Chevrolet had been using since the late 1930s. In back, there's a rigid axle on leaf springs, and a 3.55 gear spins inside. Brakes are 11-inch drums all around, which provide better than expected performance given the Corvette's light weight, and it rolls on 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers featuring simulated spinners. Tires are correct specification 6.70-15 wide whitewall bias-ply units that fill the wheel wells nicely. This car is also heavily documented, including an owner's manual, restoration photos, and a letter of authenticity from an NCRS judge. It's very rare to find a 1954 Corvette restored to this level simply because of their position in the Corvette hierarchy. Although 1954 production was greater than both 1953 and 1955, at 3634 units, they are still very rare cars. This car is outfitted for competition at the very highest levels, including NCRS and Bloomington Gold, with no corners cut during the restoration process. It would be virtually impossible to duplicate this car at this level for the asking price, and that's providing that you can find another matching-numbers Polo white Corvette. And ultimately, these remain fun cars to drive and beautiful machines to look at, no matter what the rest of the hobby has to say about their place in history. That's surely worth something too.
