There are just certain body styles that seem to be timeless, no matter how they're built. Most of them are Fords, from the '32 roadsters, to the '34 3-window coupes, to cars like this 1940 coupe. Built several years ago, the great Ford shape just never goes out of style, and when you build a rod, it's almost impossible to go wrong when you start with one of these. Although there are now companies building fiberglass 1939-40 Ford bodies, this one remains 100% Henry Ford steel throughout, including the fenders and running boards. Workmanship is very good, and the panels line up well, from the big pointed hood to the doors, to that clamshell trunk lid, which can be notoriously difficult to fit. There was undoubtedly a lot of time invested in block sanding the panels before any of the custom mixed teal paint was sprayed, and the end result is a straight, clean coupe that looks better in person that it does in photos. In addition, all of the original 1940 Ford trim was retained, again emphasizing what a great design this really is. From the original nose trim and painted grille, to the deluxe chrome headlight rings with integrated turn signals, to the unique arrow-shaped taillights, if it was cool in 1940, it's still cool today. Even the exposed fuel filler neck was retained, which is a nice piece of originality, especially when a lot of guys would have simply hidden the filler in the trunk, which isn't exactly convenient. The nicely stitched interior provides first-class accommodations for two. The custom bench seat has been covered in handsome leather and cloth for upscale looks without the hot day discomfort of an all-leather interior. Door panels have been stitched to match, and a new headliner was created overhead, giving the inside of this coupe a bright, airy feel. The original steel dash has been retained and painted to match the body, and a billet insert full of VDO analog gauges takes the place of the original piece. A custom maple panel has been created to hold the A/C controls and a Panasonic AM/FM/CD stereo system, which feeds a pair of powerful 6x9 JVC speakers in the rear package shelf. Custom vents have been molded into the dashboard and look far more integrated than those generic plastic boxes that hang under the dash. The tilt steering column features a billet wheel wrapped in matching tan leather, and you've undoubtedly already noticed that this car carries power windows as well. In back, the trunk has been upholstered to match, and will hold a weeks' worth of luggage, making this exactly the kind of rod you'll want to drive cross-country. You won't have any worries on a journey like that either, thanks to the reliable and powerful 350 cubic inch Chevy under the hood. Functional, but with a lot of polished aluminum dress up parts like the air cleaner, valve covers, and spark plug wire holders, you won't be ashamed to open the hood. Reliability is ensured thanks to a four barrel carb up top, OEM-style HEI ignition system, modern alternator, and a good old engine-driven cooling fan. The radiator is a massive brass and copper assembly with a fan shroud that will keep this warmed-over small block cool on the hottest days. Shorty headers feed a true dual exhaust system that sounds potent, but not overpowering on the road. Underneath, there's a color-matched frame featuring a Mustang II style front suspension, front disc brakes, and a rack-and-pinion steering system. A TH350 3-speed automatic handles the gear changes, and feeds a rugged color-matched 10-bolt rear hanging on a set of leaf springs. Nicely finished and built to cruise, this 1940 Ford coupe is able to drive effortlessly across the country, and still draw eyes at the local cruise-in. Thoughtfully upgraded with all the modern conveniences, it retains everything that is great about 1940 Fords, including all the cool trim. Go price a few 1940 Ford coupes, then get back to us on this one-you just couldn't duplicate it for the asking price, even if you did all the work yourself. A nice car at a great price. Call now!
