Known History

1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso

s/n 5073 engine no. 5073 (numero interno 1656/62E)

Silver Green Metallic with Tan Leather Interior

An iconic example of Italian coach builder Pininfarina’s work, the 250 GT/L “Lusso” remains one of the most aesthetically pleasing Ferrari road cars ever produced. Using Ferrari’s venerable and fully developed 3.0 liter V12 engine and driveline combination, the Lussos achieve mechanical sophistication while remaining simple enough to be reliable. Very much the road going counterpart to Ferrari’s multi-million dollar 250 Short Wheel Base, and with just 350 of these achingly beautiful cars built, it is with good reason that the Lussos have enjoyed fantastic appreciation in recent years.

This particular car was sold new in Italy via Garage Rotunda in Rome. It was imported to the United States in 1970, and was owned by the same fellow from 1976 to 1995. It changed hands a few times before being acquired in 2003 by a fellow who comprehensively restored the car, completing it in 2006. Prior to the restoration, the car was a fundamentally sound and roadworthy example (photos are included of the car prior to the restoration). The restoration was a ground up affair and included bodywork, paint, chrome, interior, suspension, brakes, and engine. There is an album containing many photos of the restoration on progress. While the paint appears to be silver in some light, it is actually light green metallic, and is an absolutely stunning color combination. Since the restoration, it has since been in the hands of a Ferrari collector who has used the car minimally (450km or 280 miles since the restoration). His collection is looked after by the fellow who was previously the shop foreman at one of North America’s permier Ferrari restoration and service shops, and this car has been looked after properly to ensure that it is serviced and ready to use.

The car is in excellent cosmetic condition. The paintwork was done to high standards and remains in excellent shape, with almost no blemishes to speak of. The color appears silver in some light, but is actually very light green metallic. There are a few very small marks from road use and one area of shrinkage near the right rear quarter window. The panel fit and gaps are both very good and the chrome is very good to excellent, with the lightest of aging on the window trims, but no significant aging or damage on the bumpers and other chrome. The wheels and tires are excellent, and the car sits on Michelin XVS tires. The car has Cibié headlamps, and all lights and glass are in excellent shape as well. The mirrors are Talbot items, and while the driver’s side mirror is in excellent shape, the passenger’s mirror is showing some aging.

The interior is in excellent shape. The carpets and upholstery were nicely done and are nearly new in appearance, with just the lightest of mellowing to the leather. The rear the shelf is beautifully quilted leather, and there is a matching upholstered suitcase on the rear shelf. The seat, door panel, and dashboard leather are excellent, with the exception of a small scuff in the passenger’s door cap. The instruments, switches, controls and other chromed bits are excellent. The carpets are also beautiful, and are edged in tan leather to match the seats and door panels. The headliner and sun visors were also included in the restoration, and are accordingly like new. The correct steering wheel has been beautifully restored.

The trunk is also finished in matching wool carpets, which are nicely installed in very nice shape. The spare is in excellent shape and there is a full tool roll with tools. The engine compartment is quite correct and clean, although it is not quite to national show standards. There are numerous correct details are in place such as Fram filters, three-eared airbox keepers, various stenciling, windscreen washer bag, and yellow fuel lines.

The car runs and drives very well. The engine is well-tuned and sounds good, and the gearbox shifts well. The brakes work as they should, and the steering and suspension are excellent, being free from unwanted play or slop. The chassis feels composed and quiet.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a lovely Lusso that has been nicely restored and is ready to drive or casually show. Wonderfully elegant, Lussos embody the best characteristics of classic Ferrari motoring and this example works well and is complete with extremely valuable and difficult to find original tool roll with tools and jack, as well as luggage. There are also many photos of the restoration
