The 1958 Chevrolet Apache pickup was significantly redesigned, including styling elements that were also found on cars like the 1958 Impala: quad headlights, a shorter, wider grille, and a hood with fin-like bulges. The upgrades were successful, and the truck went on to become a great seller for Chevrolet. Today, honest vintage pickup trucks that are still ready, willing and able to go to work are getting harder to find all the time. Many have already become street rods, and with the vintage truck market suddenly starting to gain some momentum, there are a growing number of old trucks being trailered instead of doing the towing. But clean old trucks in ready-to-work condition are still out there, including this solid 2-owner 1958 Apache from Georgia. That's all original steel on this truck, and it has never been rusty or in an accident that required major surgery. Instead, it has been properly maintained and lightly used for the past 53 years, and presents in solid condition today. The doors open and close solidly, the hood fits well, and the whole truck looks eager to get back to work. In the bed, you'll find a new wood kit and walls that have been painting in something considerably more durable than the original GM acrylic enamel. There isn't much chrome on this truck, but items like the badge on the hood and the cool peep mirrors mounted to the doors are in good condition, while painted items like the grille and bumpers show no signs of damage. The interior has been very nicely restored, and shows you just how basic these machines were when they were new. Forget luxury, these were little more than tools and nobody in 1958 was buying a pickup truck without needing to haul something. The seat features a new black and gray vinyl cover, there's a new rubber floor mat on the floor, and the door panels have been replaced. The dash features a single stylish triangular pod for the speedometer, along with four smaller auxiliary gauges. You'll also note that it has the original "three-on-the-tree" 3-speed manual transmission, something familiar to more than a few of us who learned to drive out in the country. The big steering wheel makes it easy to wheel the truck around and it's surprisingly nimble given its utilitarian roots. The only notable upgrade is a new AM/FM/CD stereo system that has been nicely integrated into the original dashboard. Pop that big hood and you'll be pleasantly surprised to find Chevrolet's "Thriftmaster" inline six-cylinder engine. Making 145 horsepower, it was the standard engine in the Apache pickup and combined with proper gearing, it moves the truck around town with enthusiasm. Wearing a relatively recent coat of Chevrolet Orange paint along with a black valve cover and oil bath air cleaner, it looks right at home in the big engine bay. It still uses the original carburetor, and it appears that both the intake and exhaust manifolds have been given a durable rust-preventative coating. These durable engines powered hundreds of thousands of Chevrolet vehicles for decades, and the one in this truck happily goes about its business with a minimum of fuss. If you're looking for a low-maintenance hobby vehicle, you may have just discovered the perfect choice. Underneath, it's still very original, from the frame to the suspension. A single exhaust system sports a cherry-bomb muffler to give the Thriftmaster a little bit of a growl, and there are signs of regular maintenance down here, too. Manual drum brakes do their job properly, and there's just no sign of rust or damage thanks to this truck's home in the south. Tires are recent whitewall radials, which greatly improve the ride and handling compared to the original bias-ply truck tires it originally wore. Clean, honest trucks like this are getting hard to find, but they're worth the search. Imagine driving it to work on nice days, then hitting Home Depot or the local garden center on the weekends. Just because it's old and cool doesn't mean it can't earn its keep. This Apache is a solid, reliable, well-maintained truck that's ready for another 55 years of work.
