Plymouth was covering both sides of the spectrum in 1969, with the Road Runner for the young enthusiasts with small budgets, and the handsome GTX for the guy who wanted a little luxury with his performance. This beautiful 1969 GTX is truly a gentleman's express, packing a fully matching numbers drivetrain under that great-looking and subtle yellow finish. Thanks to a frame-on restoration, it's a wonderful cruiser that can easily surprise some pretty potent hardware on the street. The exterior was refinished several years ago in original Y2 Yellow with a black vinyl top, and the combination is bright without being as in-your-face as, say, Hemi Orange or Plum Crazy Purple. Bodywork is always tricky on these unit-body Mopars, especially with the long quarter panels, and it's easy to see that this was a solid car to start and the bodhwork was well done. The relief lines that run from just behind the doors to the taillights are crisp and sharp, again suggesting careful workmanship. Chrome and trim has been restored, including the front and rear bumpers, stainless wheel well moldings, as well as the window trim. The GTX-exclusive grille is in very good condition, as well as the tail panel out back, which is always a difficult part to restore correctly. The black vinyl top was replaced with correct material when the bodywork was done, and remains in good condition. The black vinyl interior is definitely an upscale place to do business, with the split front bench doing a good impersonation of bucket seats separated by an armrest. Comfortably broken-in, both the front and rear seats are presentable, having been replaced when the car was restored. The dash is full of functional gauges, which, in the upscale GTX, included a temperature gauge, an ammeter, and even a clock, as well as a fairly convincing woodgrain applique that extends from door panel to door panel. Carpets are in very good condition, with recent GTX-monogrammed floor mats keeping them clean. The trunk features a new mat, full-sized spare tire, and a jack assembly. But the GTX was not just a comfy cruiser-this silk glove carries a 440 cubic inch iron fist inside. As a documented, numbers-matching car, the engine was carefully rebuilt and all the numbers noted and photographed during the restoration. The engine was given a correct coat of Hemi Orange paint, although the valve covers were chrome plated for some underhood flash. The original 4-barrel air cleaner proudly carries correct Super Commando decals and a black wrinkle finish with just the right grain. You'll also note power brakes, an original 26-inch radiator, and a reproduction red cap battery, because the aftermarket stuff never looks right. Driven about 7000 miles since the restoration, there are signs of careful maintenance, and the engine bay presents very well, and could easily go to the next level with an afternoon of detailing and a few small items like correct wire-style hose clamps. Underneath, you'll find a solid, clean chassis that has been built for the road. The numbers-matching 727 TorqueFlite transmission drives a cruise-friendly set of 3.23 gears in the 8.75-inch rear. A 3-inch exhaust system sounds amazing and allows that big block to breathe deeply. The finishing touch is a set of handsome road wheels wearing 215/70/14 Goodyear Eagle GTII radials. The GTX is just as appealing today as it was more than 40 years ago, combining high performance with comfort and an upscale look. With 440 cubic inches, this one is no pretender on the performance side, and the elegant interior will make you forget that you're driving a muscle car. Nicely finished without being so perfect that you're afraid to drive it, it remains matching numbers to protect your investment. Drive it, have fun, and let the other guys worry about road rash.
