This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 is a great example of the Mustang's less famous cousin. With a sweet-running 302 under the hood, luxury features like A/C, an automatic transmission, and a more spacious interior, it's more like what the Mustang wanted to be when it grew up. Fully sorted and ready to drive and enjoy today, it's a great alternative to the much more common Ford pony car, and you don't have to give up any performance to enjoy it. Dressed in factory original Polar White (code M) with a black vinyl top, this upscale cat has been nicely refinished in the not-too-distant past. With the same long hood/short deck styling as the Mustang, it's instantly recognizable, but much more unusual-when was the last time you saw one? A clean design with a minimum of ornamentation, there are neat details like the peaked fenders, the raised fender flares that are joined along the rocker panel, and a subtle black pinstripe. Paint and bodywork are nicely done, and the black vinyl top is the correct grain with no signs of trouble brewing underneath. The hidden headlights are fully functional, and they match the taillights, which use the same cool sequencers that the Shelby Mustangs borrowed from the Thunderbird. Chrome like the bumpers and emblems is in good condition, and all the stainless shows well. A black wing has been added to the rear deck, but it doesn't look out of place, even on this luxury-oriented cruiser. The black bucket seat interior is a fabulous place to spend some time. Clearly related to the Mustang, it's actually much more spacious, and the materials used throughout are of a notably higher quality. The seats are still vinyl, but they're wider and softer than Mustang seats, and in this car, they're nicely preserved with no splits or tears. The dash sports a funky '60s-chic woodgrain pattern that matches the steering wheel rim, and the factory A/C hanging under the dash still blows ice cold. The center console houses a T-handle shifter for the 3-speed automatic, while overhead there's a very cool consolette that includes warning lamps and map lights. Carpets are in good condition, the headliner is taut, and the door panels are in nice shape. A Pioneer AM/FM/CD player has replaced the original radio, and amazingly, the clock keeps accurate time. The engine is a brand-new (186 miles) 302 cubic inch V8 with a bunch of new performance parts. Summit Racing provided the intake manifold, carburetor and air cleaner, while a set of Cougar finned aluminum valve covers makes it look a little more authentic. The massive A/C compressor is front and center, but you'll also find power steering and power brakes included on the Cougar's roster of features. Long tube headers help the 302 breathe easy, dumping into a great-sounding Flowmaster exhaust system. New springs and shocks have been recently installed, giving the cat a new car ride, and the wheels are cool 17-inch aluminum units from a late-model Mach 1. All the mechanical pieces are clean and well-maintained, and it's obvious that someone has cared for this car all its life. This car also includes receipts for the recent work, as well as all the original components including the engine, radio and wheels. If you're a fan of the unusual, and like your performance with a bit of luxury, this Cougar is the hot ticket. Nicely built, reasonably quick, and fully functional, a lot of money has been spent bringing it up to this level. And even with all the optional equipment, it's still thousands cheaper than a comparable Mustang coupe. Bigger, more luxurious, and less ordinary than a Mustang? What else do you need? Call now!
