One of our associates here at Streetside called this car elegant yet tough, which I think sums it up brilliantly. The early Chevelle was a clean design, free of many of the styling gimmics of the era, and was based on some very sturdy hardware that ran for years with only cursory maintenance. This one sports a rugged 327 V8 backed by a 4-speed manual, and is dressed in classic white over a black interior. In short, it's a great cruiser that will look good no matter where you go. Nicely finished, this Chevelle has all the hallmarks of a car that has been restored as needed over the course of its life, which is a good thing. That means is has always been on the road and never needed extensive repairs. Bodywork is good, with a uniform look to the sheetmetal, and decent prep under the recent paint. Gaps show that someone cared when putting it back together, and the doors open and close properly, and the hood and trunk don't need heavy slams to seal. The hood features cool faux vents that were all the rage back then, and it's a nice change from all the fake cowl-induction cars you see today. Stainless trim has been polished, and appropriate Super Sport badges installed on the rear quarters, because this is a real code 38 SS. It proudly wears a correct SS grille up front, along with a pair of crossed-flag emblems on the front fenders. Bumpers and door handles show fresh chrome that sparkles against the bright white paint. Code 763-B black buckets are the only way to fly on a car like this, and they present in good condition with only slight signs of usage. There are no rips or tears in the seat covers, the foam underneath is still firm and supportive, and the back seat almost looks showroom fresh. The dash is plain and simple, like the rest of the car, and the stock gauges are augmented by a vintage tachometer mounted low. The console is an ultra-cool piece with a built-in clock, and although this was originally an automatic car, the 4-speed setup uses period correct components. An upgraded AM/FM/Cassette stereo has been fitted in the original location, and sharp-eyed viewers will note that a Vintage Air A/C system has been discreetly added under the dash. The engine bay is a nice combination of original parts and quality aftermarket equipment. A non-matching 327 makes 350 horsepower and wears appropriate decals on the chrome air cleaner. Cool chrome valve covers have '327' embossed on their surface, and it's fed by an Edelbrock carburetor and intake. A polished billet pulley system has been installed to handle the power steering, alternator, and A/C, and a massive electric fan on the original radiator keeps it cool. Long tube headers feed a true dual exhaust system with some mellow-sounding mufflers that are quiet when you need them to be, but let the engine speak with that characteristic small block bark under throttle. The chassis has been undercoated for long-term durability, and a rugged 10-bolt rear hangs out back. Things like the shocks and brakes have signs of recent maintenance, and this car plain goes down the road without any fuss. It rolls on a set of classic Rally wheels wearing 255/60/15 raised white letter radials. This is a very nice car that can be driven and enjoyed immediately. Everything works, and all the hard work has been done. It's a real code 38 Chevelle SS, which gives it some bragging rights, and it runs well enough to live up to its reputation. With a great color combination and comfort upgrades like the A/C, it can be driven across town or across the country without worries. Let the other guys worry about investments and concours judging; you'll be having too much fun behind the wheel. Call today!
