The early Mustang fastbacks are some seriously good-looking cars, and the GT350 only enhanced everything that was already great. This '65 Mustang GT350 tribute packages all the details that make a Shelby special, including a body that inverts the traditional Shelby paint job, along with a great running 289 and a black Pony interior. The first thing you notice on this car is that vivid blue paint job with white LeMans stripes. Prep is decent and the car fits together well, and no matter who you are, it will be hard to mistake it for anything else. Shelby details include the plexiglass quarter windows, which enhanced visibility on the track and were more of a functional upgrade than a purely stylistic one. Then there's the scoops on the rear quarters, which, on the R-models fed cold air directly to the rear brakes but is cosmetic on street Shelbys. And, of course, who can ignore that cool R-model front bumper? The split design was originally configured to hold an oil cooler, but on this one plays host to a pair of powerful Hella driving lights that light up the landscape like flamethrowers. Hood pins, a mesh grille, and the GT350 stripes along the rockers are details that will make the guy in the next lane think twice about making a go of it once the light turns green. Inside you'll find the highly desirable upgraded Pony interior, which is showing some age, but it's more of a comfortable, lived-in look rather than wear. All Shelbys got black interiors like this, so it's entirely appropriate in this car. The steering wheel is a Shelby-style wood-rimmed piece that is a little thicker than the originals, so it feels great in your hands. An optional center console dressed up the Mustang's driver's compartment, while the gauges are standard Mustang fare. Door panels and the back seat are in excellent condition, and the relatively recent black carpets are protected by a set of GT350-logo floor mats. Power comes from a high-revving 289 cubic inch V8 that makes all the right sounds. It's dressed in correct black paint on the block, and a chrome air cleaner and Shelby-style cast aluminum valve covers add to the illusion. The engine bay is clean and shows signs of regular maintenance, from recent hoses and belts to plugs and wires. The shock towers are in good shape, which is critical on an early Mustang, and there are no signs of previous accident damage. A reliable C4 3-speed automatic channels power aft, which is just how the GT350H models were built, so don't think an automatic doesn't belong in a Shelby. The chassis is original and in good condition given its age, and it has been updated with a set of 17-inch Torque Thrust style wheels wearing 225/45/17 Nexen radials. Sometimes a the best defense is a good offense, and with the looks of this Shelby tribute, a lot of folks will definitely think twice. Fortunately, it has enough performance that it can deliver on the promises its flashy paint job makes. With desirable upgrades like the Pony interior, a cool paint job, and those oversized wheels, this is a car that will get lots of looks on the road. Give us a call today!
