In 1965, if you wanted a snarling, barking Mustang that would absolutely eat other street cars alive, you had to go to the Shelby store and pick up a GT350. Today it's a little easier because you can build your own, and I can guarantee there's no Shelby that ever rolled out of the Shelby Los Angeles factory that ever moved like this silver coupe. With a 347 cubic inch stroker motor under the hood, it puts big block power in a package the same size and weight as a 302, making for a phenomenal power-to-weight ratio. If not for the cowl induction hood, this car might be the ultimate sleeper. With well done, but certainly not flashy bodywork and a sophisticated silver paint job, it doesn't scream at you when you see it. You look a little closer and see that someone really did take their time putting it together, and that it's much more than a big engine stuffed in a lightweight coupe. Panels are well aligned and gaps are good. All of the original Mustang trim was retained, too, with a nice rear bumper, an original grille, and those cool pieces of chrome trim on the quarter panel scoops. Like I said, if not for that fiberglass hood and the Shelby-style front bumper, this one would slip right under the radar. The interior is more of the same, with original Mustang buckets forming the foundation of the bright, airy cabin. There's no center console, although there is a trick shifter for the C6 underneath, but otherwise, it's a sensible, handsome Mustang interior. The lower dash has been painted to match the body, and contrasts nicely with the black dash pad, door panels, and carpets, while a light colored headliner keeps the interior from being too monochromatic. A fat Grant GT steering wheel feels great in your hands, and you're going to need something sturdy to hang on to when you crack the throttle. Gauges are clean and most likely original, while a newer AM/FM/cassette stereo has been installed in the original radio's location in the dash. Mechanical oil pressure and temperature gauges have been installed under the dash to keep an eye on the hot small block under the hood, and they're nicely positioned as to not be too intrusive. But the real reason you're going to fall in love with this pony is under the hood. The engine is a 347 cubic inch stroker motor that features a set of Brodix aluminum heads with ports big enough to swallow a golf ball. A Holley 750 cfm double pumper feeds an Edelbrock intake, while a set of Hedman long-tube headers manage the exhaust. It rips to life thanks to an MSD ignition system, and sounds absolutely amazing, both at idle and full song. Those cool cast aluminum Brodix valve covers will probably give the whole thing away if you let folks look under the hood, but you won't care after you've embarrassed them at the track. The transmission, as I mentioned, is a built C6 automatic, which is usually reserved for duty behind big block V8s, and it's more than up to handling the power the 347 dishes out. In back, it's a bulletproof 9-inch with 3.73 gears that make the most of the stroker motor's high-RPM tendencies. The suspension is basic Mustang, and it rolls on a set of chrome Halibrand-style wheels wearing 225/60/15 radials. While there are a few clues that may give it away, I would classify this little silver Mustang in the sleeper category. The aggressive exhaust note and cammy idle may give it away, but in terms of raw acceleration potential hidden in a relatively unassuming body, this car is a predator. Nicely finished, it shows pretty well, too, and you definitely won't be ashamed to be seen driving it when you're not going all-out. At this price, it's hard to go wrong. Call today!
