"Speak softly and carry a big stick," seems to have been coined with the contemporary idea of a sleeper in mind. This amazing 1967 Chevelle is perhaps the ultimate execution of the concept of keeping a low profile while hiding serious horsepower under the hood. With show-quality looks, a 500 horsepower 427 under the hood, and a heavy-duty chassis to make the most of the power, this is a car that you don't want to meet in a dark alley late at night. Or anywhere, for that matter. Choosing a 2-door post coupe is brilliant-lightweight, but with a stiffer body structure than a hardtop, and its slightly less stylish looks keep it from getting too much attention. But someone should have told the guy doing the bodywork that you don't want to make it too perfect-this car's inky black finish is incredible. Everyone knows that if you're going to paint it black, it had better be perfect, and that seems to have been the plan from the very beginning. I can't imagine how many hours of block sanding went into getting this car this straight, but you could probably grow a pretty full beard while you did it. The paint went on, and it's deep and lustrous, and if your prey is paying attention, they'll probably notice that this isn't your average Chevelle. Inside, the builder stuck to the script, right down to the unassuming bench seat. There's no console and no buckets to make it look sporty, just a steering wheel, a shifter, and a set of pedals to dance with. The upholstery is reproduction factory stuff, so it looks correct and right at home in the Chevelle's interior without drawing any additional attention to itself. Yeah, there are a few necessary additions, like a tach and some auxiliary gauges under the dash, but nothing that will stick out to the guy in the car next to you. The steering wheel itself is a fat leather-wrapped piece, which perhaps gives it away, but when that 500 horsepower 427 wakes up, you'll be glad to have something substantial to hold on to. A Hurst shifter manages the gear changes, and does it in style thanks to a cue ball knob up top. The radio has been upgraded to an AM/FM/cassette unit, but retains the original knobs to help the low-profile efforts. The trunk features spatter finish paint and a mat, but no weight-adding spare or jack assembly, which is a classic racer's move. The heart of any sleeper, however, is the powerplant, and this one doesn't disappoint. Stolen from a 1967 Corvette, the killer 427 living in this Chevelle cranks out more than 500 horsepower on pump gas. Dressed like it was born there, with correct decals, Chevy Orange paint, and chrome valve covers, it is definitely not subtle. Street-worthy upgrades include long tube headers, a 3-inch dual exhaust system from Dr. Gas, an MSD ignition, and a serpentine belt system up front. The transmission is a Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual, which really makes the most of the 427's power band and still allows comfortable high-speed cruising thanks to a deep overdrive. Out back there's an indestructible 9-inch Ford packing 3.70 gears on a limited slip, the perfect compromise between acceleration and top speed, especially given the 5-speed. The suspension has been reinforced with fat sway bars, and there are big disc brakes at all four corners. Wheels are Chevy Rallys that have been powdercoated black in keeping with the sleeper theme, and they actually look like standard steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps-the perfect illusion. There's no question someone built this car to go into battle. The details are right, and the hardware is extremely impressive. While I'll admit that the exhaust is a little loud, and frankly, it's simply way too nice to be truly effective bait on the street, this car has enough testosterone in it to grow hair on a basketball. Fully sorted, deadly fast, and beautifully finished, this Chevelle is stunning for many reasons, but being flashy definitely isn't one of them. Call today!
