With the handsome good looks of a Chevelle and the utility of a pickup, the El Camino offers the best of both worlds: performance and practicality. This 1969 El Camino has been built to further blur the lines that separate vehicles-big performance, great looks, and a lot of comfort. The bodywork is nicely finished and the workmanship is shown to great effect thanks to the Corvette Torch Red paint. These vehicles typically led harder lives than your average Chevelle, and finding a clean one, let along investing enough to bring it to this condition, is tough. Gaps are good and a lot of time was invested in getting the body panels this straight. The bed was refinished, but has seen some work since then, which is perfectly OK-that's what these cars are all about. Trim is bright and well maintained, with good chrome on the bumpers, a stock grille, and the trim around the bed is very nice, with no obvious dings or damage from use. I applaud the builder who was able to resist the temptation to make an SS clone, and instead presents an honest Elkie. Hi-back black leather buckets anchor the interior, which is a nice mixture of restoration pieces and aftermarket upgrades. Carpets, headliner, and door panels are reproduction pieces that look good and fit right, and the console is an awesome addition to the usually bare-bones El Camino. The dash is original, but the gauges have been upgraded to a full set of analog Auto Meter Sport Comp in a silver panel designed expressly for these cars, so they look right at home. A custom console has been grafted on to the original, and it houses the head unit for the powerful stereo system, which features a Sony CD player and iPod connectivity. Tilt the seats forward and you'll discover a custom enclosure that houses several powerful Alpine speakers, including a pair of tweeters, as well as two JL Audio subwoofers. A/C has been added, and uses the stock dash vents and controls as part of a stealth installation. If your idea of entertainment runs more towards G-forces rather than decibels, you'll be relieved to know that the engine is packing heat. A 383 cubic inch stroker motor, it cranks out a reported 450 horsepower and probably an equal amount of torque. In addition to a few extra cubic inches, the engine offers Edelbrock aluminum heads and intake, as well as a 4-barrel carburetor. The engine bay is sanitary and clean, with a few dress-up items such as satin black valve covers and air cleaner with red Chevrolet lettering. The transmission is a TCI TH350 3-speed automatic, and with the TCI name attached to it, you know it's bulletproof. The stock suspension has been lowered 1.5 inches up front and 3.5 inches in back, giving it a low, mean look that is still fully functional on the street. Massive Coys wheels stuff the wheel wells, wearing 245/40/18 front and 255/45/20 rear Falken high performance radials. This is a really nice car, er, truck. None of the upgrades have compromised its utility (well, OK, I wouldn't haul a pallet of bricks with those 20-inch wheels), but its drivability and performance have been greatly enhanced. That stroker motor sounds downright vicious blowing through those 2.5-inch pipes, and you won't be keeping a low profile with the eye-catching Torch Red paint. But if there are times when you just feel like relaxing, the leather-lined interior is a great place to be. Turn on the A/C, crank up your favorite tunes, and enjoy the ride.
