By 1949, when this sedan was built, the Packard Motor Car Company had been in business for 50 years. They had no way of knowing that in nine more years, the company would be abandoned by Studebaker, and as a result, continued to build on the successes of the all-new 1949 vehicles, which won awards and accolades throughout the industry. This particular 1949 Packard sedan presents as an awesome post-war driver that can be driven and shown with pride. Although the look polarizes some enthusiasts today, there's no denying that these are high-quality cars that carry all the hallmarks of their pre-war siblings: quality materials, precise assembly, and respectable performance. In the case of this four-door sedan, it shows just 22,052 original miles, making it an incredible survivor that has been restored as needed over the past six decades. Paint is good, the result of an older respray that has great patina and looks great on the Packard's body. Chrome and other bright work are most certainly original, and while some pieces are showing their age, it's probably best to leave everything as it is and work towards proper preservation. Accessories include the sun visor mounted to the roof, an exterior side-view mirror, and bumper guards front and rear that have probably been there since it was new. The Packard's luxury-themed interior was a great place to be in 1949, signaling that you had arrived, but that you were smart enough to not need to make a lot of noise about it. The seats and door panels are upholstered in a handsome fabric that is both durable and comfortable, and the well-padded seats are all-day comfortable. The dash still recalls older designs-which is a good thing-with art-deco styling on the gauges and a center stack that houses the radio speaker. The big steering wheel makes maneuvering the big sedan effortless, and it certainly appears that the rubber floor mat is original. In back, the trunk still carries its original fabric floor covering, as well as a matching steel wheel and vintage bias-ply spare tire. Packard's claim to fame-as well as part of the reason for the company's demise-is the silky smooth straight-8 engine. The one in this car displaces a modest 288 cubic inches, but is built with the same precision and care that all Packards received. It's virtually vibration-free, and its torque output feels like an electric motor-silky smooth without any apparent strain. We can confirm that this is the original engine for this car, and it runs superbly. The transmission is a 3-speed manual with a column-mounted shifter that operates with just your fingertips. The suspension is the same basic setup all manufacturers were using at the time-A-arms and kingpins up front, with a live axle on leaf springs out back. Hydraulic drum brakes at all four corners are surprisingly effective, and the recent whitewall radials certainly help make this feel like a modern car. This lovely sedan represents an extremely inexpensive way to enter the Packard fraternity, where the car is welcome at all the same events and shows its older brothers are. With straight-8 power, it cruises easily at modern highway speeds, and with their reputation for reliability, these are excellent tour cars. Comfortable, spacious, and inexpensive to own and operate, this is a high-end luxury sedan with legendary Packard quality at a Chevrolet price. Call today!
