This handsome Forester Green 1949 Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck is a nice cruiser that's ready to drive and enjoy today, and can be upgraded without taking it off the road to create something truly special. With handsome lines that are common to all the Advance Design pickups, it's instantly recognizable and has become one of the most popular models to customize as this one has been. Retaining all the original good looks and functionality, and combining them with a modern V8 drivetrain, the result is a truck that cruises effortlessly at modern highway speeds, and still looks like a vintage machine that draws appreciative glances from everyone who sees it. Forester Green is the ideal color for these trucks, and was perhaps the most popular color when they were new. Well finished, it's a nice blend of original panels and relatively recent paint that was done not to stun judges at a car show, but to recreate the original finish. Today you can use this truck as a truck without worrying about scratching a $10,000 paint job, and that's where this truck truly excels. The bed has new oak planks that contrast brilliantly with the green paint, while the body-colored grille and bumpers give it a custom look that isn't too modern. Inside there's a black vinyl bench seat that's comfortable and supportive, although it's important to realize that these vehicles were tools more than transportation. The door panels are finished in a combination of painted steel that matches the body and black vinyl inserts that soften the interior somewhat. Just as with the original truck, a rubber floor mat covers the floor, staying with the truck's utilitarian roots, and making maintenance and cleaning a snap. The original steel dash is intact, but new analog gauges have been fitted in the original location, and the charcoal gray finish may very well be the truck's original color. You'll notice that there's currently no radio installed, giving the new owner the option of locating an original piece or installing something custom to suit his own tastes (and it should be noted that radios were optional in these trucks and seldom installed, making this one with its factory radio opening relatively rare). The steering column and wheel are from a late-model pickup and are connected to a modern power steering system. And while this was originally a 3-speed manual, it now sports a column-shifted automatic. Power comes from a reliable 350 cubic inch V8, which is a massive upgrade over the original 216 cubic inch "Stovebolt" inline-six. Where the original truck was happiest when speeds were kept under 50, this modern powerplant gives this vintage hauler the ability to run with modern traffic without worries, and is every bit as reliable as the original engine. Like the rest of the truck, the engine bay is functional more than dressed for show, although there are vintage-looking cast valve covers for a period-correct vibe. An Edelbrock intake feeds the machine, while a set of long-tube headers manage the exhaust, breathing through a pair of Flowmasters that give the truck a sound unlike anything on the road in 1949. The front suspension is all-new, updated to modern A-arms, coil springs and even a sway bar, none of which were even available when this truck was new, and the result is a truck that drives like a car. Power front disc brakes provide reliable stopping power no matter what the load, and it rides on a set of handsome forged Centerline wheels wearing 215/70/15 front and 225/70/15 rear tires. Vintage haulers can be a lot of fun, and if you go to any show, you'll undoubtedly see several trucks just like this that range from stock to outrageous customs. A lot of the difficult work has already been done, and as-is, this truck is a great-looking driver that will be a lot of fun this summer. But if you're the kind of guy who likes to tinker, this truck could also be the foundation of something amazing, and the hardware is already in place needing nothing more than a creative mind to take it to the next level. This is a truck that gives you the best of the hobby: a great driver that shows well and is a lot of fun to work on over the winter. Call today!
