If you can find a nicer 1978 Corvette pace car than this, buy it. With just 11 original miles (yes, ELEVEN), it is perhaps the most perfectly preserved '78 Corvette on the planet. For AACA HPOF judging, Bloomington Gold Survivor status, or NCRS Top Flight competition, this car is a slam-dunk. Original down to the oil filter and probably the air in the tires, it's an astonishing in every that someone was able to not only preserve this car, but to resist taking it out on the road for more than 30 years. Today it probably exists as an object d'art more than an automobile, which is perfectly OK-if you're looking for one to drive, give us a call, we have several of them available here at Streetside Classics. Describing a zero-mileage old car is always a challenge-the highest praise anyone can offer on a car of this caliber is that it is new. With a Corvette, however, you have to be careful to describe it as new, and not perfect, because cars like this are excellent road maps as to how they were built in '78. Don't get me wrong, they were nice, but true Corvette collectors know that a perfect Corvette is a flawed Corvette, and these were, after all, production cars. However, with that said, this one seems to be better than most, with good color matching on all the components, including the troublesome bumpers, which always seem to be a slightly different shade on these cars. Fit and finish is factory correct, and actually, this one is above average in that department as well, with good gaps all around and items like the headlight doors fit correctly. The decals remain in excellent condition with no fading, checking, or peeling, and the 25th Anniversary badge on the nose is still crisp and sharp. Inside, the silver leather interior is very well preserved with no signs of dryness or cracking due to age. The carpets, dashboard, and door panels are as if they just came out of the box, and I'm guessing that the T-tops have never been removed. Weather stripping is still supple and seals up properly, while all the glass is clear and shows no signs of delaminating as sometimes happens to cars in long-term storage. The car will also come with the original passenger side window with the window stickers still intact. Everything works, including the A/C, power windows, and optional AM/FM/CB radio (with microphone included). The engine is the standard L48 350 cubic inch V8 whose only sign of age is some rust on the cast iron exhaust manifolds, although these tended to scale over before they even reached the dealership, so this is hardly a flaw. There's still bright blue engine paint on the valve covers, the air cleaner still holds the original paper element, and all the hoses are nicely preserved. If you've wondered how, for example, the wiring harness was routed, this car is your map. If you've questioned the finish on someone else's power brake booster, the answer is under the hood of this car. The chassis carries the same standards, with no corrosion or damage, and perhaps the most immaculate factory Corvette exhaust system I've ever seen. The four wheel disc brakes still carry the original pads and rotors, the lines and hoses are the same ones installed on the assembly line, and there are no drips or leaks from any of the major components, which is probably due to the exceptional care this car has received from day one. The wheels are gorgeous, unmarked slotted aluminum Corvette pieces with a matching red pinstripe, and they still wear the original 225/60/15 Goodyear GT Radials installed when it was new. Survivors don't get more perfectly preserved than this. Of course, it's no secret that there are quite a few '78 pace cars that were put away for posterity, but to date, we haven't seen one better than this. Stored under perfect conditions since new, time has not yet found a way to wrap its fingers around this fiberglass sports car, and surely there can't be more than one or two that are even potentially better than this. No serious Corvette collection is complete without a pace car, and if you're truly serious, you'll want the best one in the world. This is it. This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
