Known History

After a lengthy gestation period, the now ubiquitous Porsche 911 entered production in 1964. The design was the work of Dr Ferry Porsche's eldest son, Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche and the company's joint founder and chief body engineer Erwin Komenda. The car featured rack and pinion steering and both torsion bar suspension and disc brakes all round. It was initially powered by a dry-sump, air-cooled, 2-litre, flat-six engine, overhung at the rear and allied to a five-speed manual transmission. In 1968, the 911's wheelbase was increased by 57mm, and the rear overhang reduced by the same amount. At the same time, some 22lb was saved from the engine crankcase by manufacturing it in magnesium instead of aluminium - these changes greatly improved the car's handling. In 1969 the engine capacity was increased to 2.2-litres. This was offered in three levels of tune, namely : T (125 bhp), E (155 bhp) and S (180 bhp).

The Porsche on offer is a 1970 911T with optional Sportomatic transmission and wears the appropriate registration 'JWT 911J'. It has Orange coachwork and a Black interior and has apparently undergone an extensive bare metal restoration by Harpers, during which the engine was removed, serviced, painted, polished and treated to new seals etc. The vendor further informs us that the clutch, brakes, fuel tank and window motors are among parts recently replaced and that ú14,700 was spent on the car last year alone. He now regards the bodywork and paintwork as "pristine" and the trim, engine and gearbox as "very good". We understand that while the Porsche has covered less than 1,000 miles in the last dozen years it is now serviced and tuned to provide the next keeper with many enjoyable and hopefully trouble-free miles. The MOT is valid into May 2012.
