All new in 1966, Chevrolet still managed to improve the Chevelle in 1967, with things like disc brakes, an energy-absorbing steering column, new bumpers, and a blacked-out tail panel on SS models. Already a handsome car, the SS included a sporty-looking hood with non-functional grille inserts, and the sail panels framing the rear window look as good today as they did when they debuted 45 years ago. And for performance, the availability of a thundering 396 cubic inch big block making as much as 375 horsepower was good news indeed. This handsome Chevelle has been refinished in its original code KK Emerald Turquoise Metallic, which is a subtle, sophisticated color that's ideal for the guy who wants his performance to stay low profile without flashy stripes and bright colors. Getting those big quarter panels straight and smooth is no easy task, and I'm guessing there are more than a few long nights invested in getting this one to look as good as it does. For many, the lines of the '66-67 models are the most popular, with chiseled features and a notable lack of trim and other ornamentation, and there's no denying that this is a very good looking car. The trim that is part of the design, however, is in excellent condition, with recent chrome on the bumpers, a correct blacked-out SS tail panel, and a brightly finished grille. Inside, you'll find a correct code 775 Medium Turquoise Roncina Cloth/Medium Turquoise vinyl interior that's right out of the bright 1960s. It's nice enough that I have to believe it has been restored, but that was quite a while ago and the entire interior has a fantastic patina that suggests preservation, not reproduction. With a front bench and column shift for the 2-speed Powerglide, it could almost be a sleeper, and the simple wood-grained dashboard gives away nothing. In back, the spacious rear seat looks like it's never carried a passenger, although color-matched seat belts have been thoughtfully provided for all passengers. The trunk offers a correct mat, nicely finished floors, and a full-sized spare tire under a matching cover. Power comes from a date-code correct 1967 396 cubic inch V8. Rebuilt when the car was restored, it makes all the right sounds and moves the relatively lightweight Chevelle with real authority. The engine bay has been lightly modified, with the most notable items being a low-profile Edelbrock air cleaner and those big Mickey Thompson cast aluminum valve covers which are probably fairly valuable on their own. Power steering is part of the package, making handling effortless despite the big block up front, and items like the blue spark plug wires and chrome alternator bracket add a little flash. Original cast iron exhaust manifolds are superior to headers when it comes to controlling under-hood temperatures, and they dump into a 2.5-inch true dual exhaust system with Flowmasters. Wheels are handsome cast aluminum pieces from Z Racing and they wear BFGoodrich white-letter radials. Chevelles have been popular since they debuted decades ago, and there's no denying that they are handsome, fast, and comfortable cruisers. With big block power, this one is formidable on the road, but thanks to its subtle (and correct) color combination, it's more of a gentleman's express than boy racer. With durable components, this is a car that you can easily drive and enjoy without worries, and the finish work makes it one you'll be proud to show.
