More proof that good things came in small packages, this 1966 Plymouth Valiant convertible is Chrysler's answer to the Ford Falcon and Chevy Nova. With trim proportions and industry-leading styling, the Valiant was a slam-dunk for Chrysler in the mid-60s. Today, these compacts are popular collector cars thanks to their wide variety of options, and you are just as likely to see one restored to original condition as one that has received a radical Pro-Street conversion. This pretty red ragtop was refinished several years ago, and still presents well today. With crisp styling that includes the split grille up front, and that trademark Virgil Exner crease running from nose to tail, it's arguably the most advanced-looking of the popular compacts from the Big Three. The bodywork is very good, and you can see in the photos how clearly it reflects its surroundings. With a white band running along the bottom, it has a long, lean appearance and a cheerful demeanor. After all, who can argue with a bright red convertible? There's quite a bit of trim and brightwork on a Valiant, from that unique grille to the taillights that are canted forward to form tiny tail fins. For the most part, the trim on this car is in good condition, with things like the front bumper and stainless rocker trim being original. The rear bumper appears to have been refinished at some point, and the taillight housings are still crisp and show well. And the red and white V-shaped Valiant badge is pretty darned cool, like a superhero's emblem or something. Inside, the red and white bucket seat interior is nicely finished. It's flashy, yes, but also comfortable and perfectly in tune with the rest of the car, and the workmanship is excellent. New carpets were installed at the same time, and the side panels were reworked to match the new seat covers. The gauges are low and cover the basics-a large square speedometer and smaller rectangular auxiliary gauges monitor the engine, and it's all highly visible through the spokes of the two-tone steering wheel. Slender stalks control the turn signals and the automatic transmission, and the original AM radio is still delivering news from the center of the dash. Overhead, the white convertible top fits snugly and stows neatly under a matching white vinyl boot. This Valiant is powered by Chrysler's advanced and surprisingly powerful 225 cubic inch "slant six" engine. The one in this car has a few hot-rod parts (what, you thought only the V8s got long-tube headers?), and is wearing a coat of Hemi Orange paint like its larger brothers. With the tuned intake manifold, which Chrysler engineers pioneered with the cross-ram induction systems of the '50s, it's torquey and quick to rev. It has also been nicely detailed with correct hoses and clamps, a correct air cleaner with "Super 225" decal as original, and a matching silver valve cover. In a lightweight like this, you don't need power steering or power brakes, giving the Valiant a direct, connected feel on the road. Those long tube headers dump into a true dual exhaust system, and while the sound is a little unusual, you can't argue with the results-this little red convertible can hustle. The rest of the chassis is solid, with factory style undercoating and age-appropriate looks throughout. The rear end seems to have been recently serviced, and it wears a set of traditional chrome Cragar mag wheels and a set of BFGoodrich T/A radials. Don't overlook this Valiant Signet convertible if you're looking for fun, inexpensive fun this summer. Someone sank a lot of money into this car, and its reliable hardware means that it's always up for a cruise. Everyone smiles when they see this bright red ragtop, and there aren't many cheaper ways to own a car with a top that folds. An excellent starter collectible or the missing piece of a larger collection, this Valiant represents a lot of bang for the buck. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
