While the GTOs and Firebirds get all the press, the big Pontiac Bonneville was the epitome of luxury muscle. With 428 cubic inches under the hood and Pontiac's famous wide track suspension, they're awesome road cars that are impressively quick and can cruise effortlessly at illegal speeds for hours on end. The Bonneville was for a younger buyer who still wanted a healthy dose of luxury, a car that would announce his success without being Cadillac flashy or Buick conservative. It's only a matter of time before these cars start to escalate in value, thanks to their combination of performance and style, and none will be more highly-sought than the big block convertibles. This very handsome 1969 Bonneville convertible has had one quality repaint in the past, which was probably an easy job given how straight the body is. Fresh code 65 Antique Gold paint looks awesome on the big Bonnie's curves and thanks to careful assembly, it fits together better than many ragtops of the era. The chrome is very good, including the nicely integrated bumpers. Correct rocker panel trim features a Bonneville nameplate, and bright red 'Bonneville' and '428' badges highlight the traditional Pontiac split front grille. Fender skirts were in fashion in 1969, and on this cruiser there's no rust in this critical area and the skirts fit as they should. The black bench seat interior features room for six, and a wide, console-style dashboard puts all the controls within the driver's reach. Gauges are limited to a speedometer and fuel level indicator, and the transmission indicator seems to get more real estate than it really deserves in the center of the dash. Luxury touches include a burled walnut applique on the door panels and passenger's side of the dash. To be honest, the interior looks much too nice to be original, but has a very authentic feel and great patina that goes with the exterior, making this look like a well-maintained 1969 Bonneville may have looked in, say, 1974. There are no splits or tears in the seats, and the carpets show no fading and only light wear. One cool detail you may have missed-the high-beam indicator light is a profile of the traditional Pontiac indian head mascot. Overhead the fully functional power convertible top is in excellent condition. Power was up in 1969, thanks to the bigger 428 cubic inch V8 making 360 horsepower. Even in the luxury-oriented Bonneville, it was enough to make the car a formidable highway cruiser and the undisputed king of the luxury muscle in '69. This is the original, numbers-matching engine, and shows signs of proper care over the years, and even some efforts to freshen the Pontiac Turquoise finish on the valve covers and block. Power steering and brakes were standard equipment (this is, after all, a very big car). Recent work includes new belts and hoses and what appears to be a newer alternator. Underneath, it's solid with none of the usual convertible trouble areas in the passenger compartment floors. There's no undercoating so you can see how solid the original steel is, and there are still traces of the factory-applied Antique Gold paint everywhere you look. A TH400 3-speed automatic feeds torque to a 12-bolt rear end, and a recent set of 225/75/15 whitewall radials and original wire wheel covers make it ride like it should. '60s luxury/muscle is a red-hot segment of the hobby right now, and there's no better example of the breed than the Bonneville. Big, fast, powerful, and stylish, this convertible never fails to draw a crowd whenever it's parked. As striking today as it was in 1969, it's hard to resist a big car that's also muscle car quick. The restoration work on the body and interior has mellowed to a nice patina, making this car appear highly authentic today. If a GTO and Firebird prices have gotten too far out of reach, you owe it to yourself to take another look at this Bonneville, because this one is best appreciated from behind the wheel. Call today!
