Known History

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet

Chassis # 111.027-12-004213

With its reputation for solid and reliable automobiles established, Mercedes-Benz debuted a newly styled convertible in September 1961. These well-built automobiles - referred to by many as the last of hand-built Mercedes'- were never widely available.

The ultimate luxury Mercedes was created in 1969 when the 280 SE 3.5 convertible was introduced.

This model has an iron block aluminum head V-8 used in the forthcoming 350 SL.

The 280 SE 3.5 is highly prized among Mercedes enthusiasts for its high level of luxury - the wood and the leather work are reminiscent of earlier hand-made cars and the performance is also quite remarkable for a five-seater car, with a 0-60 mph time of under 10 seconds, 200hp @ 5,800rpm and a top speed of 125 mph.

Only 1,232 genuine convertible, such as the car presented here were produced between 1969 and 1971.

Chassis # 004213 was dealer ordered through the Mercedes-Benz European delivery program on 01/17/1971 and delivered at the factory in Stuttgart on 06/04/1971 and shipped to the USA.

It comes with a comprehensive book of paper work, including purchase order, bill of sale, bill of lading for shipping and data cards.

The car remained in its original hands until 2003, and was then purchased by the current owner from the estate of the original owner.

The mileage is 39,000 and is documented, making it one of the lowest mileage 3.5 Cabriolet available on the market today.

Originally special ordered in DB571 red Metallic, over fragrant red Roser Leather, its presentation is both unusual and stunning. The Car is also equipped with the optional limited slip differential and the rare zebrano macassar ebony dash and five Kangol seat belts with original inspection stickers.

Brand new Sekurit OEM windshield and rubber gasket, new top and padding, with original top keys in the glove box.

The car had one repaint in the original color, and it shows excellent panel fit to the eye and the touch. With even gaps throughout, no rust, and no bubbling, the car has had a very gentle life.

The only noticeable flaw is a slight dent on the chrome of the rear bumper, otherwise it is a no excuse car.

Mechanically, the car starts, runs, and shifts perfectly, with ample and effortless power.

Front bake rotors are new along with all the brake hoses, and the power steering assembly was resealed so there is no leak.

The undercarriage is solid, with no haphazard undercoating or area patching. It is an incredible survivor.
