To most Chevelle fans, 1970 is the ultimate year, and that year, the top dog was unquestionably the SS 454. Big block power and enough torque to reverse the Earth's rotation were standard equipment, and the handsome curves and quad headlights of 1970 make these some of the most highly-sought muscle cars of the era. They also make fantastic resto-mods, as this 1970 SS ably demonstrates. With modern conveniences like powerful A/C, 20-inch wheels that look perfect in the Chevelle's wheel wells, and a spectacular stereo, this is a car that will be the center of attention anywhere it goes. If attention is what you're looking for, painting a car bright Cranberry Red is a step in the right direction. Add in a set of bright white SS stripes, a cowl induction hood, and finish it all to show standards, and you get a car that looks like a million bucks just standing still. The Chevelle's muscular shape will never go out of fashion, and when they're as well done as this one, details like the subtle flared fenders and the relief line that runs from nose to tail tend to stand out even more. The chrome is nicely finished, with bright, clear bumpers fore and aft, and brilliantly polished stainless around the windows and wheel wells. Correct SS454 badges have been used on the front fenders, and a correct blacked-out SS grille carries the torch up front. Dark tinted windows give it a sinister look, immediately tipping you off that this is no ordinary SS, and if you live in a hot climate, you'll definitely appreciate it with a black interior. Speaking of the interior, the original bench seats are so nice that I have to believe that they've been reupholstered, but the warm patina looks entirely appropriate. While seats, door panels, carpets, and headliner are original-style, some liberties have been taken which only enhance what's already there. You can't miss that black and red leather steering wheel, which is thicker and smaller in diameter than the original piece and feels great in your hands. New SunPro gauges keep an eye on the big 454 working under the hood, and they're joined by a vintage-looking tachometer. Vintage Air A/C has been retrofitted, and it blows ice cold through the original vents and uses the factory controls, suggesting that this may have been an original A/C car. The centerpiece of the interior is surely the powerful stereo system which includes a Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit driving a Memphis amplifier and a pair of massive subwoofers in a custom enclosure in the trunk. Turn it up only if you dare, it's extremely powerful. Powerful is the right word for the 454 living under the hood, as well. The beautifully dressed big block seems made for show with liberal doses of chrome, including the air cleaner, valve covers, and accessories. The engine itself is black, which is an awesome contrast to the bright red engine bay, and hides dirt and grime very well. Up top there's an Edelbrock intake and a Demon 4-barrel carburetor, and a set of long-tube headers manage the exhaust. The cooling system is augmented by a pair of electric fans that also maintain airflow over the A/C condenser, insuring a chilly interior even when the car is stopped. Underneath, there's a TH400 3-speed automatic, a healthy dual exhaust system, and new components throughout the suspension to give it a lowered stance. Power disc brakes do an adequate job of controlling the speed, and live behind those beautiful 20-inch Boyd Coddington wheels. With such large wheels, equally large tires are required to really stuff the wheel wells and keep it from looking under-tired, and fat Nitto 255/30/20 front and 285/30/20 rear tires fit the bill perfectly. If you're looking for a stock 1970 Chevelle, they're out there. But if you want something special that always seems to draw a crowd in a way that no stock Chevelle can, this gorgeous resto-mod might be a smarter choice. Big power, easy drivability, and powerful A/C and stereo systems make it a pleasure to drive. And while it's tough to make modern wheels and tires look right on vintage iron, this car nails it with the right combination of style, size, and rubber. A beautiful car that can be driven and enjoyed immediately, and you can show it with pride. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom.
