California-born, this 1967 Cougar shows just 61,111 original miles and sports its original, numbers-matching 289 V8 and somewhat unusual 3-speed manual transmission. Many people would call this car restored "as necessary" over the course of the past 44 years, and it presents as a great driver that is a lot of fun to drive and show at local cruise nights. Everything works, including the trick sequential taillights. The car was discovered in storage in southern California since the mid-1990s, and was given a bare-metal repaint approximately two years ago. As a western car, all the sheetmetal is 100% original and in excellent shape. Even the nicest original cars need some freshening, so while this one was apart, it was checked for straightness and professionally finished before the fresh Laser Blue paint was applied. The electric blue finish really pops on the Cougar's curves, and a white pinstripe was added to accent the fender line that stretches from front to back. At the same time, a wing was installed on the rear deck, borrowed from a Cougar Eliminator for a period-correct look. The white vinyl top was replaced as well, and the brilliant material gives the car a very clean, purposeful look. In addition, all the chrome was either professionally refinished or replaced with an accurate reproduction piece. Details like the hidden headlights and sequential taillights, which are Cougar trademarks, are in excellent condition and fully operational thanks to a new turn signal module, headlight door vacuum pods, and a fresh headlight door solenoid actuator. The interior was restored at the same time, given new seat covers, carpets, and a new headliner. All the pieces are authentic reproductions, and the interior has a very authentic feel. Cougars came standard with bucket seats to capitalize on Ford's idea of a personal luxury car, and these are as comfortable as any of the era. The simple dash features a pair of round gauges ahead of the driver, all of which appear to be in original, functional condition. That dash pad looks so good because it was produced on the original tooling from 1967, and the door panels are remarkably well-preserved originals. The 3-speed manual transmission's shifter still pokes up through the floor and is topped with the original knob that shows years of gentle patina as it slipped through the gears. A recent AM/FM stereo system with four Alpine speakers has been installed in the original location, but none of the dashboard was cut or modified. The 289 cubic inch V8 under the hood has never been out of the car or rebuilt, and with just over 61,000 original miles, why would you? It runs extremely well, with a smart small block burble at idle and a great roar at full song that belies the Cougar's luxury car goals. Things like the air cleaner and valve cover sport a recent coat of Ford Blue paint just to freshen things up a bit, while the rest is respectably original. There are signs of a fresh tune-up, with a new distributor cap, new wires and plugs, and fresh hoses throughout, ensuring reliable operation. Power steering makes it easy to drive, and mechanically this car is in top condition. The chassis is very solid, as you would expect from a west coast car, and a dual exhaust system makes all the right V8 sounds. Beautiful reproduction Magnum 500 wheels are the perfect selection, and wear new white letter radial tires. Mercury fans should be pleased that clean, original cars like this still exist. With a sympathetic restoration and a lot of originality still underneath, it's a great-driving car that looks freshly rejuvenated. The Cougar was more sophisticated than the Mustang in a lot of ways, but great for all the same reasons. It's the right size, the right shape, and with the cool details like the hidden headlights, it has a look all its own. Drive this one home today and you won't regret it. Call now!
