After the 1926 merger of Daimler-Motoren and Benz and Cie the combined Daimler-Benz AG had two manufacturing facilities. Automobiles descended from Daimler were built at Unterturkheim (Stuttgart) and Sindelfingen. The Benz-based automobiles came from Mannheim. This 1936 Mercedes-Benz 200 with four-place Cabriolet B coachwork is a wonderful example of the core of Mercedes-Benz's Stuttgart models. Developed from the 170, the 200 was built from 1933-1936. Its front-mounted 1,961cc L-head inline six with a 4-speed transmission develops 40 brake horsepower at 3,200 rpm but 82.6 lb-ft torque at 1,100 rpm that makes it easy to drive, even fully loaded with passengers and baggage, at low speeds. Significantly for its time, the 200 had four-wheel hydraulically-actuated brakes and a coil spring rear suspension, much more advanced and reliable than many of its contemporaries. With the 200 drivetrain this comfortable cabriolet B has a top speed of just over 100 kph. The body has rollup windows on the doors and rear quarters with a removable B-pillars for tight weather sealing in adverse conditions. Finished in red with tan steel wheels matching the tan leather upholstery and cloth top, its dual sidemounted spares, veed Mercedes-Benz grille and aggressive demeanor accented by a thin chrome beltline molding, chrome door hinges and big chrome shell Bosch headlights leaves no doubt this is a Mercedes. An attractive older restoration, it runs and drives well. The dashboard displays three circular gauges to the right of the lefthand steering wheel. A generous trunk under the rear deck has ample room for luggage. Semaphore turn signals by the windshield posts are a welcome and period-correct safety accessory. Its condition today is that of a very attractive, well maintained and freshly detailed car for tours that will show with pride at the end of a day's run. Rarely seen, this 1936 Mercedes-Benz 200 Cabriolet B will be a welcome participant in road tours and a welcome example of the range of Mercedes-Benz model offerings in the mid-30's.
